Possible stray

There's a little cat hanging round my door some days. It doesn't look to be in great condition, and it seems to turn up looking for a meal at weekends, so I think it has a home but not a very good one and its owners bugger off and leave it without food. Because of lockdown, I haven't seen any of my neighbours for weeks (I'm in London) so I haven't been able to ask around to see if it has a home. It's fairly friendly but timid - I can give its head a scratch, for example and i'm happy to feed it when it turns up (I've got a cat of my own, he is a lad with a strong personality so just adopting this one won't do). The problem is, I'm moving in a few weeks. I don't want to just abandon it if it is a stray, but I doubt I can catch and box it, and it may have a home anyway. What would you do?

Well it sounds like a stray and you have to assume it is. Can you entice it inside with food? If not then you'll need a charity to help you trap it. The charity will then of course scan for a chip so if it does have owners they can be contacted. In the meantime feed it daily and leave out water.

I'm going to private message you.

Is it possible that you can pop the cat in a carrier and take it to the vet for scanning?

Our local Nextdoor website is full of pix of cats who've gone AWOL and others who are hanging around looking hungry. Sometimes there's a happy reunion. Worth a try.
