We are bringing a 13 week old kitten home next week. We’ve been told to put him in one room for the first few days till he starts to bond with us and wants to explore.

Although I don’t want him to get used to sleeping in our room, the thought of just closing his door and walking away on his first night is worrying me.. poor little thing! What have others done?

I would keep him with me too in case he was scared and lonely being away from his cat mum and kittie siblings.

Our kitten slept alone for the first week or so and really she seemed fine. She had biscuits and water, as well as a litter tray in "her" room. Perhaps having some time alone helped her settle in.
But the big eyes when the door closed. Guess where she's sleeping now.

I let mine sleep with me, they still do and the youngest is 8!

When we got our current cat a few years ago she was of a similar age to yours. I brought her straight into the kitchen so she could see where here food/water and litter are then let her be, leaving all the internal doors open. We put a bed for her in the kitchen, one in the front room, and one on the landing where she had a good view of downstairs and the staircase. She wandered around in her own time getting to know the house and had access to multiple hiding places until she got used to us and her new home. She settled in really quickly.

We kept Havelock in the living room with us, (me and DD23.) We slept in the room with him for the first 4 nights then we moved back to our bedrooms so he had the run of the hallway and our bedrooms with all other doors shut.
He sleeps next to me and has done since the get go, he only gets off the bed to graze or use his litter box.

I don't restrict my cats at all. I couldn't cope with guilt trip. It really depends on the personality of your kitty. If you do keep in the one room to begin with, visit him often and give him a cuddly toy to cuddle up to in his box. Hope all does well.

We put our dkittens in a downstairs study room with a small table at the doorway to keep ddog out - wouldn't have irl but she was fooled!! Took dkittens a week to brave leaving the room!!
Straight to ddogs bowl - where she stood and watched them raiding her food!!
A month in and they bed shared!!

I'm getting my kitten soon he will be in the living room until he has settled and I will sleep downstairs with him, then he will have the run of the house. What breed/colour are you getting?
