Cat claw problems?

Cuddling57 · 03/07/2020 19:33

Asking here before I ring the vet as they are only taking emergencies at the moment.
Does anyone know what this is on my cats claw? It's on the middle one of both front paws.
Is it just the skin part growing down more as she is very old?

She isn't bothered by it and walking fine.
Picture for cuteness. She is at least 16 (rescue)

She's beautiful. The could be like that as she's old.

I have no idea what it is, but it doesn't look like something to be worried about. I'm sure it's just part of the random shit that happens to both cats and humans with the ageing process - like the cat equivalent of the ridgy fingernails or knobbly old-lady fingers which I seem to have developed.

Is it the skin part or is it where her claw hasn't shed properly?

Look underneath it might make it clearer my old cat didn't shed his claws properly his brother used to help him or I would right from being a kitten he just never looked after himself he washed his bum and body rarely his face always had jelly on his face! His brother would wash himself sigh and wash his brother Grin

Not sure but I'd be a bit concerned it might be something fungal. Where's the mumsnet resident vets when you need them?

MiddlesexGirl · 04/07/2020 18:41

Very cute paws though 😍

Maybe its a partcially shed claw and thats a bit she didn't get off when she was grooming. Our two have shed claws in the past but not sure if its a regular thing for most cats. Does she groom as much as she used too? If she is eating, drinking and seems fine I wouldn't worry and maybe call the vet monday for advice.

My old girls nails look like this... she 21 and the last few years they have been really bad. She doesn't retract them fully now and they don't shed very well. I have to take her to the vets to have them trimed as she's a menace when anyone goes near her legs

Allergictoironing · 04/07/2020 20:30

My first thought was improperly shed claw sheath. Mine shed theirs regularly and well, but I only know this because they are indoor only so I'm guaranteed to find the remains - usually on Boycat's favorite fleece when I sit there to cuddle him & they dig in to my leg or bum! I know that snakes sometimes have problems shedding parts of their skin, so it may be that?

madcatladyforever · 04/07/2020 21:33

All of my 19 year old cats claws are like that, they really stick out. I have to have them trimmed regularly. They are liek bear paws otherwise. And as a cat that likes to wake me up by batting my face - ouch.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It's reassuring to hear other cats have this too.
She isn't bothered by it at all and as it's on only two claws in total and one on each front paw I'm going to assume it's because of age and not shedding properly. She doesn't go out much and climb anymore so that's probably not helping. She only really ventures into our garden and will occasionally go out the front door when it's open. I know she can get up the fence as I've seen her but she much prefers to meow at the front door until we let her in Grin.
