Cat Proofing Garden for kitten

Kitten has arrived. Been here 1 week, litter trained, well socialised, loves cuddles (mainly on my chest in this heat!), sleeps from midnight until 8am, very playful and vocal loves his tree (thanks for all of the tree advice). Exactly what we were hoping for and more.

Thinking ahead I would like to cat proof the garden. Have you done this? Did you DIY? I have a couple of professional quotes but it’s expensive.

Get a catio. (See flat cats website)

RedKittens · 29/06/2020 11:41

I’m looking to make an alley catio down the side of the house. About 20 sq meters. That thread looks great thanks!

We have a gorgeous Bengal that cuts through the garden and need a system that keeps cats out as well as ours safe.

Had a quote from ProtectaPet for overhang and an independent local builder.

Is your gorgeous kitten a Siamese? What is their name?
I really want a catio too 😻

RedKittens · 29/06/2020 12:17

Yes siamese. Have you got siamese? I want him to have space to exercise fully. He pelts across the house for 30 minute spurts of exercise then sleeps. I’ve lost 2lbs playing with him Grin

He is Mittens

Ooh, he's gorgeous. Is he very vocal? I love a loud, chatty cat!

Just a word of advice - I read something recently about someone having to take their catio down as it breached planning regulations, so do double check before you install it.

RedFleece · 29/06/2020 13:39

Thanks @Pelleas. He is a lovely vocal chap! Has full conversations and loves a game of ball. Super affectionate and thinks he is a beard. DD is a very gentle quiet teen and they spend a lot of time just sitting together and chatting.

Good tip on planning. I think it’s 3meters for our buildings at the appex but 2 on the boundary and no more than 3 meters out from the house? If anyone knows different please let me know.

Oh just made me think if it’s 3 meters out I wonder if that means 3 meters long too. As it would be about 14 meters long.

There should be some guidance on your local council's website as to what the permitted limits are - hopefully you can plan within them. Your local builder might well have some knowledge too.

There’s this system too, it’s Australian, some Australian councils ban cats roaming due to their unique fauna.

RedFleece · 29/06/2020 17:32

Thanks Fluffycloud that is a neat looking system

Ellmau · 29/06/2020 17:33

Mittens is beautiful!

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/06/2020 19:29

I know it feels expensive to cat proof but I lost my “scared of cars” Bengal on our road that’s on the edge of a housing estate & has speed bumps. It’s 8 months ago and I still cry every day because I know that if I’d cat proofed he’d still be here. The regret is huge.

It wouldn’t have stopped him dying of cancer or a saddle thrombosis or anything else spontaneously deadly but it would have reduced the variables.

RedFleece · 29/06/2020 19:40

@fluffycloudland77 that must be so hard. Have you got other bengals? The one that visits us is a sweetheart but I do need to proof the garden so that her and all the cats that travel through our garden don’t get trapped.

Mittens will be an indoor cat or garden safe outdoors cat.

Coronacurls · 29/06/2020 19:48

Mittens is so gorgeous - is he a seal point?
Yes I have 3 siamese, they are amazing so affectionate and clever.

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/06/2020 20:03

No, we only had him. He didn’t really like other cats.

Bargebill19 · 29/06/2020 22:01

Oh he’s beautiful- made my night seeing him!

RedFleece · 29/06/2020 23:16

@Coronacurls yes a seal point. Siamese are wonderfully loud and loving aren’t they! Are yours inside cats?

@Bargebill19 how many cats do you have?

RedFleece · 29/06/2020 23:17

Oh @Fluffycloudland77 so sad for you to lose him.

I’ve had a good investigation and I think a bespoke construction is the way forward.

Thank you for all of the replies. I will post a photo of final catio when done Smile

Pelleas · 30/06/2020 07:05

Master of your sofa already!

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/06/2020 08:15

That sofa seat is now his forever.

Catio are good because you can decorate them & grow cat nip in little raised beds.
