My cat disappears when the weather is nice

For days! Angry

My bloody cat, every time the weather is nice, just pisses off for days without a thought for anyone. I get sick with worry every time he does it and he'll just rock up multiple days later like 'what?'.

Does anyone elses do this? It's been nearly 3 days now and I haven't seen him at all. I've been out searching the streets and everything!

Oh God-what a worry! Is he neutered? I thought they weren’t supposed to roam once done.
I trained my boy to come in at night by calling ‘Samson, bed time’ then giving him a treat. DH feels a right part yelling that down the street if I’m having an early night but he’s alway come belting in for his reward.

I hope he turns up soon.

My Ellie was awful last summer. Out till the early hours and came home once at 7 am when i d been up all night looking.
She s 3 now and not done it this year. I think us all being home due to lockdown seems to have given her a new routine of in by 7pm.
However I was away last year on holiday and she worried my son sick by staying out 3 days in the nice weather.

recklessruby · 15/06/2020 22:39

And she s neutered but has a hunting drive.

CaspianSeaDog · 15/06/2020 22:48

Get a tracker and find out where he goes. The one we have includes a heat map so you can see where he spends most of his time.

TinnedPearsForPudding · 15/06/2020 22:52

Yep, my 2 yr old neutered female does this. As soon as it gets slightly cooler or the rain starts - she's right back to sleeping on the bed

fatbottomgirl67 · 15/06/2020 22:55

We have one that does this. Usually a week or so at a time but has done 7 weeks before. I really thought he was dead that time. We're really rural and he always comes back thin and covered in fleas. Think he just lives rough and kills all the local wild life. I'm sort of used to it but am so happy to see him when he does return. He is neutered, vet says it's not uncommon with Gingers.

confusednortherner · 15/06/2020 23:02

@recklessruby I think we maybe sharing a cat 😂 our Ellie goes feral in summer. Lives mostly outside sometimes rocks home in early hours and chucks dog out his bed so she can have it or opens door to bedrooms and spends next day sleeping off her adventure in dd bed.

Watto1 · 15/06/2020 23:07

Yes, my cat does this too. Usually doesn’t bother going out in the evening but if it’s warm he’ll stay out all night or come crashing through his catflap at 3am. He’s 10 years old and neutered but still likes to pull the occasional all nighter!

Hmm interesting, he is a ginger! And we live rurally too, lots of fields and stuff by the house.

He has been neutered. Today will be the third day I've not seen him for.

He just doesn't think of anyone but himself Grin we had crying children last night because they wanted him to come home.

He is a proper outdoors cat though. Even in the rain he will go out for most of the day, he hates being locked up inside. But at least he comes back and sleeps the night when the weather is bad so I know he's alright.

He won't come when called. I've tried to train him with treats and stuff but he really does just do his own thing. If he's busy or doesn't fancy coming in yet he may as well be sticking a middle finger up at you. He just won't come until he's ready to.

We have another cat, a girl. She stays really close by the house and comes straight in when you call.

@confusednortherner that's exactly how my son described her last year "gone feral" while i was away. Got back at half eleven from a 500 mile trip and she was sitting on the back doorstep good as gold!
I likened it to kids playing up at school with the NQTs then as soon as the old teacher s back so is the good behaviour!

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/06/2020 14:17

If your rural and shine a torch in a field late at night it’s full of rabbits so plenty of prey.

The farmers shoot all the fox’s so the only natural predator they have is ferrets et al.

Has the wanderer returned? Hope so.

One of mine did this in May last year, she'd never done it before. Came back last November. She's left again a few weeks ago. She's 5 so not particularly old and she's neutered.

I also have a neutered male who will happily stay out for 3-5 nights with no return over the summer months. He's a very proficient hunter and he always returns, sleeps as deep sleep for a day or two then he goes again

So he may come back, fingers crossed.

Sand1Ire · 30/08/2024 14:16

Your long term wanderers are giving me some hope that my lassie (also 5year old) will return from her summer adventure eventually. She's gone almost 4 weeks; it's a very rural area here also, so like trying to locate a needle in a haystack, no obvious risks to her. We are emotionally bankrupt from the last months worth of stress and flew home early from the USA after she didn't return the first night, so we're financially bankrupt too!

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/08/2024 15:13

I don’t blame you though we would have done the same. I hope you find her. The weathers getting cold at night now so hopefully she will return soon.
