Found severely injured cat

Just need to share as it has upset me quite a bit. I was out in the park with DS when I found a severely injured cat. It was panting and had only very limited use of its back legs and a wound on its front leg. I called DH to bring over the cat carrier and we took it straight to our vets. They've confirmed it is chipped so just waiting to see if the owners can be contacted and if we're allowed an update. I think it was hit by a car and injured its spine, so I'm worried it will have to be PTS ☹️

Oh no, poor thing! Thank you for taking it to the vet.

Sparklingbrook · 28/05/2020 11:51

The owner of that cat will be so grateful for your actions.
It doesn’t sound in a good way but at least they will know.

Oh poor thing, well done for helping 🙂 It's distressing to see an injured animal. I had a cat that was hit by a car and it was an awful experience. Hoping the cat will be OK ❤

A somilar thing happened in my garden. We took kitty to the vet who would only give a painkiller as he wasnt.chipped. we took him home and knocked on doors. We found the owner who went to their regular vet and diagnosed a fractured pelvis and tail. . The cat made a full recovery but had a tail amputation and I see him out all the time. Paws crossed.Flowers

Well done you . You gave it its best chance and alleviated its suffering .

Thanks everyone. I'm really a lot more upset than I thought I would be. It's a beautiful little thing (Birmese I think) that I'd seen around before. Poor DS didn't understand at all, he just thought it was hilarious daddy was carrying a cat in a box, but now mummy is upset (not crying though, fortunately)
@HappyHammy that's so good to hear that it made a recovery!

Just called the vets for an update. They were quite curt with me and said repeatedly they couldn't give me any information, other than that they found the owners and the cat is under treatment. They couldn't even tell me whether it was still aliveConfused I said to pass our details on if the owners ask.

It's lovely that you helped the poor soul. At least he'll be out of pain. Shame about the vets not being too friendly. Maybe they're a little stressed at the moment. Who knowsBrew

Chatons · 28/05/2020 16:21

Oh I hope the owners contact you. Being spoken to that way would probably make me cry, after all you’ve done today!

Allergictoironing · 28/05/2020 16:36

I do hope the vets don't think that you were the ones who ran it over, and made up about finding it in the park! I know an awful lot of people would do just that so they don't get blamed Sad Angry

VivaLosGatos · 28/05/2020 16:55

Someone did this for our cat when he was hit by a car.

Sadly he didn't make it in the end, but we're ETERNALLY grateful to the kind lady who drove him straight to the vet and gave him his best possible chance. At least we know he was helped and cared for as much as possible.

We sent her a card, but had to do it via the vet because of confidentiality (apparently).

Letmegetthisrightasawoman · 28/05/2020 17:11

@Allergictoironing It occurred to me afterwards that that might have been what they thoughtSad I hope they realised we arrived on foot! And I would be honest if I ran a cat over (don't drive). Equally, I'd never blame anyone for hitting our cat, they just race across the road...

What you did is very kind, I hope kitty recovers but if he or she doesn’t you have still alleviated their suffering and given them the best chance.

Allergictoironing · 28/05/2020 19:47

Oh I wasn't suggesting that you could even think of doing that, just that the vets will have seen it in the past.

As a pp said there can be quite strict confidentiality issues, again due to somewhat unscrupulous people e.g. trying to get a reward from the owners for saving the cat etc. It's a nasty horrible world out there I'm afraid, and vets can see some of the worst of it sadly Sad

Letmegetthisrightasawoman · 28/05/2020 22:12

@Allergictoironing I know you weren't suggesting thatSmile The cat lives on a side street off ours (I thought it was lost a few weeks ago and asked on social media) so hopefully I will learn more.
