Cats ruined new carpet

Our two cats (sisters) are generally brilliantly behaved and we are very smug. We moved into a new house a few months ago and they encountered carpets for the first time, and in a short space of time they have wrecked a brand new carpet. Threadbare, loose threads, horrid.

Using scratching posts, sticky tape and the odd spritz of water I think hope they've stopped this 95% of the time. One cat has a cheeky scratch but it's rare now.

This leaves us with a wrecked carpet. Any ideas? It makes me so sad to look at.

Hard floor it?.

This is one of the reasons I gave up on carpets. I'm not aware of anything that deters them. Maybe someone else has suggestions. Hard floors all the way for meConfused

Is it just at the sides or in doorways? Not in the middle? If so you could chop the carpet down to make it a massive rug?

If it’s in the middle you can only try and cut the loose sticking up bits off and see if it’s less noticeable.

There’s a method you can use in small bits which is to use a special tool to punch out a circle of damaged carpet, go to under a couch or use an offcut and punch a bit out of there too.
Swap bits over and glue in place.

I don’t know how large a chunk you can do at a time. I recall cigarette burns being cut out using this method.

You think it’s carpet, they know it’s a huge horizontal scratch pad. Bit ostentatious having it all over the floor like that but who are they to argue?.

Ours never scratched our drs leather sofa. Got cocky and bought a velvet Duresta. 6kg of Bengal with claws like samurai swords sat on the back and sharpened his claws on it. Life time ban from the lounge after that.

Carpet samples?

Mines the same but I observed that she would do a funny moon walk on deep pile rugs and wouldn't scratch. So I got more deep pile carpets for the stairs. The walking on clouds type. She doesn't scratch at them, because there's nothing really satisfactory about it I don't think. O have wood flooring everywhere else.

They're little gits.

Why do we bother?Grin
