Transitioning from garden to litter tray

I was wondering if anyone has any experience of transitioning cats from a garden loo to an outside litter tray?

We have three cats and have for some years kept the border on one side of our small square garden as their loo. DH frequently turns the soil but now the weather is nicer and we're at home and spending more time out there, downwind can be pretty hideous!!

We were thinking that we might try and keep an outdoor litter tray instead and see if they'll use that, but I fear we're on a hiding to nothing. Has anyone tried that before?

I bought this which was ignored for 6 weeks and now one cat loves it. Other cat just has a sheepskin on the floor.

I have been thinking of making a small sand litter area for mine or using a litter tray instead with litter or sand. Worth a try with a cheap litter tray.
