Cat bed - recommendations (tempted by donut style)

Madcats have rather outgrown their cat bed, but keep trying to both cram in for their daytime slumbers (a few months ago they dragged it into the bathroom with underfloor heating, so I can understand why). I think it is time for an upgrade.

My Facebook feed was awash with ads for donut or mushroom beds (that look soft and cuddly). I am just wondering whether any pampered cats have them? Do they get really manky after a few months?

Look up
Lazy days pet beds. All my cats beds are from them. Magic loves her teepee and uses it all
The time. Reasonable prices considering they custom make what ever you want. Pictured is one of their cushions and the teepee.

Ours liked covered dog beds. I think a lot of cat beds are too thin on the base & that’s why cats will steal the dogs bed given the chance.

Allergictoironing · 30/04/2020 20:42

Mine are igloo lovers. Again the bottoms can be a bit thin, but I got a sheet of Vet Bed and cut it to size.

Sorrry I can't remember what sort of size Madcats are, but my Boycat is 6 kg & his sister not an awful lot less, and I reckon they could curl up together in the biggest igloo with plenty of space if they wanted (they prefer to sleep in separate igloos).

Mine are cats therefore ignore the lovely fake fur cat beds well they don’t they think they are they’re mum and go and suck them and paddy paw them Hmm

Sleeping is done in human beds of course, usually DD3s which is a sort of high sleeper in a warm south facing room.

Beamur · 30/04/2020 23:55

I have one cat who sleeps either on the floor or in a cardboard box.
The other 2 like my bed during the day, various radiator beds or their fancy barrel scratcher/bed at night.

hawleybits · 01/05/2020 00:05

My two love their tall cat tree beds. They like being up high, close to the radiator and able to look out of the window during the day.

Cardboard box always a winner as is the washing baskets especially if there’s freshly washed clothes on there or better still ironing. Or to annoy the dog they’ll sleep on her sofa.

My childhood cat loved my beanbag. She sank into them and used to do the purring and paddling with her paws thing. Every so often we had to take it outside and shake the hair off or give it a hoover.

Lellochip · 01/05/2020 00:18

I was sucked in by all the ads for the furry donuts. They aren't half as padded as they look on the pics, but lapcat promptly moved off her permanent spot on my knee and into the donut. It got to the point where I felt quite neglected to be honest.

I've just decided to get rid of a spare (human) bed that she's ignored for years, so of course that is now her new favourite 🙄 but donut still in occasional use. It's not particularly manky, I vacuum it and think it's machine washable though haven't tried it yet.

If you go for one I would say shop around and get a cheap one, the prices vary a lot, but I'm assuming quality probably doesn't. Mine came from Amazon

Box
Towel
Clean washing
King size bed, ensuring you stretch side to side
Laptop
Desk chair
Anywhere the human was sitting before they got up for a 30 second task
Bath mat
Stairs ( especially if black, but not the top stair, aim for the darkest one, preferably on a bend)
Outside the back door, with dramatic paw on hkass, but refuse to move if opened
Wardrobe
Beanbag
Bathroom doorway

We bought the cat a fuzzy donut. She ignored it. Dog started to use fuzzy donut. Cat was miffed so now they both use, it in rotation, and unbelievably share it on the odd share it. It looks lovely. I wish there was a people sized fuzzy donut.

ClientQ · 01/05/2020 01:21

Mine has an igloo which he loved. I bought the donut one off eBay which he ignored for 4 months
Now he won't get out of it and I suspect it's actually attached to him like a shell. I ask him if he's getting up and he just looks at me like "no mama, why would I?"

What's the point in buying a cat bad- you already have a perfectly good, very spacious cat bed at your disposal.
The fact that you might actually want to sleep in it yourself is neither here nor there.

OrcharD14 · 01/05/2020 13:08

My cat loves this one from John Lewis, maybe as it’s sturdier than her previous ones.

The small doughnut ones on Made.com have extremely thick padded insides and not too high rims so cats can lay their chins on it.

I got an igloo type bed for my 2 cats years ago thinking they'd love a little place to sneak off to. Found them both sleeping onto of it and within a week it was squished and out of shape lol. Tried the donut type beds and they liked it for a while, but then decided our lap and couch was better. Gave up with cat beds after that and now they're just for show 😂 I guess cats just sleep wherever they feel like 🤷‍♀️

Hamsterian · 03/05/2020 11:55

I’ve got three cats of my own and always foster, so have a load of beds, baskets and everything in between. The donut beds are generally favoured by smaller cats. They all love some cardboard beds I bought from Zooplus at £6 each. I also have a plastic dog bed in small and one in extra large, they come with a cushion thing. I then roll the cushion into some fleeces to make it softer. They love those beds and me too because they are easy to clean. I would also buy a few thick, padded cushion/ matt things if possible with a faux sherpa side. You can then pop them on the sofa, coffee table etc. Mine all love it.

Hamsterian · 03/05/2020 11:59

Something like this but get the ones which come with a cushion and then you just have to tuck a fleece around it:

undercoveraessedai · 03/05/2020 12:01

I've bought mine all sorts over the years including soft unicorn beds 😂

At the moment they're taking turns in a nest they've made out of some costumes I washed and stupidly left on the floor for five minutes... And they're so cute I don't want to move them and can't tidy up around them in case I wake them up 😂tempted by the donuts but suspect they'll go the same way as the unicorns.

Madcats · 05/05/2020 20:50

Apologies. I thought I had posted this days ago:

Thanks for the hints and tips everybody. Madcats are long, muscular, Siamese. Yes, they will just be using the bed part time because it is much more fun to fall asleep on the office chair or DD's beanbag before snuggling up between my legs at 5am. Radiator beds were more of a base for attacking each other, than for sleeping (and are completely ignored now that it is warmer).
