Anyone successfully stopped their cats from scratching carpets?

I have 2 cats that are hell bent on scratching up carpets. I have tried repellent spray and it did nothing, they have a big cat tree to scratch at and a very long scratching pole that they do use but also use the carpets. Has anyone found a successful way of stopping this?

Just ask them not to ......
Ha! Like that works .

When we got our lovely M/F last year , I made a point of telling the CPL Fosterer that our carpet was ancient ( about 14 years) and I was prepared that the new cats would attack it . Because our previous cat (who was 17) clawed the old carpet down to wood .

So far the little darlings have :
pulled the bit of carpet at the top where the tread is triangular and had to be folded to get fitted . I have repaired it to stop this

female cat attacks the carpet outside DD room because she wants in. She then prances about on DD bed and keeps her awake

female cat attacks DD wallpaper

female cat has broken two fruitbowls by throwing them off the table

male cat threw my computer mouse off the table

Male cat is timid so if we say "No" he'll potter off .
Female cat needs physically picked up and removed from whatever she is terrorising.

Though at 3am, I tend to just push DD bedroom door and let the cat in... to save my poor carpet Blush

I put those flat cardboard scratchers down. I keep two out and she loves using them and leaves the carpets and furniture alone.

My F cat has torn all the hallway wallpaper off from skirting to about a foot up the wall. She has also destroyed the carpet on the first two stairs It's awful as I've only been here a year.

I know that shake n vac puts her off - so long as I only Shake and don't vac!

Oh and I have Three Scratching posts and a 'cat mat' which is like a hessian mat that she will use.....as well as the stairs.

No idea how to stop it. Mine never touched the carpets until I bought them a scratching post covered in carpet (doh!) Bought a cardboard scratching thing instead and one just lies on it like a sofa, but still scratches the carpet.

Only after getting several of these humongous scratching posts that they love and putting them in the few places that we still have carpet. They're pretty expensive and massive (to give an idea of scale, the cat on the right is an 18lb tom cat!) but they're definitely favoured over the carpet.

We minimised it by getting some of those cardboard floor scratchers. There’s literally one in every room.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 12/04/2020 06:32

If you buy a really expensive suite they'll be happy to scratch that instead.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/04/2020 06:44

We put hard flooring down

Hamsterian · 12/04/2020 08:05

Get some flat scratching boards (Zooplus does great ones) and you can also purchase some carpet off cuts to leave around. Especially the sisal ones. If you are considering new carpet then the loop ones are not advisable because they get ruined more quickly.

Accept that having a cat and nice soft furnishings are incompatible?! Our gorgeous boy has shredded our carpet. It's only upstairs so most people don't see it! Sprays and scratch posts didn't work

FreckledLeopard · 12/04/2020 12:05

We've removed the carpet from all rooms except the stairs and upstairs hallway. Got a new carpet 14 months ago which the cats have already destroyed. We tried getting the cardboard scratching mats (boy cat sleeps on it every night and scratches it), but the girls just shred the carpet. I've just accepted that we'll have to try-carpet every few years.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/04/2020 12:26

We have hard floor on the stairs, floor monster sell it or b&q.

MountainPeakGeek My cat has the same scratching post, which she uses regularly & really stretches too. Unlike other ones, she hasn’t got bored of it!
