Water bowl help

We adopted our cat almost 3 years ago when she was about 8 months old. She was absolutely terrified of everything at the beginning. Now she's part of the family and sometimes almost affectionate.
Over the last couple of weeks she's started to paw her water bowl and move it from its usual spot up to maybe a metre away. Does anyone know why she would do this?

She might feel insecure where it is? Or she could be trying to turn it over

Wolfiefan · 10/03/2020 13:23

One of mine does this. Either for attention or because she prefers to drink off the floor! Is it near litter tray?

Grapefruity · 10/03/2020 13:29

@slipperywhensparticus it has been in the same place since last August and she has never had an issue with it before now. She kind of slaps the water with her paw and moves the bowl a bit at a time and then leaves it once it's in the middle of the floor

@wolfiefan No, it's in a different room from her litter tray and she usually does it when no one is around

My daughter is trying to convince me that its because she's bored and needs a friend.

It's meant to be a primal thing about burying food for later.

One of mine likes to cover and paw his bowls, annoying but not much you can do about it.

Water is fun! Grin

Bluejaune · 10/03/2020 13:34

Is it near her food as they don't like that? Have you changed the type of bowl even if it's in the same place? The Cats Protection have very good cat behaviour short videos which explain a lot of things about them and why they do certain things.

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 10/03/2020 13:37

It's because she's a cat. They move in mysterious ways.

As long as she's drinking and happy, I wouldn't worry.

Haribo has a pet mate fountain. He doesn't like the fountain bit which I have disconnected. However he loves sticking his paw in the water, licking it off but usually just flicks it around. I've put it on a cheap plastic tray so the floor isn't soaking. Water is fun though.

Grapefruity · 10/03/2020 13:48

@Bluejaune yes, the 2 bowls are beside each other. She's never had a problem with that before

The reason I was worried is because it's new behaviour

Maybe she's just discovered that it's fun though!

Thanks everyone 😺

Could you try it in a different place away from her food bowl and see if the behaviour stops then?

Grapefruity · 10/03/2020 16:52

@Bluejaune yes, I think I'll try it. Thanks

I’d leave it where she puts it, there’s nothing to be gained from arguing with cats.

You’ll just have to step over it a hundred times a day.

She's playing with your mind ...
