Hello lovely mumsnetters,

Can any of you give us some reassurance. Long story short .. myself and dd were away for four days suddenly and couldn't get DD's nine-month old kitten and my two year old cat into the cattery. No problem as my friend fed and watered them on the night after we left (we left loads of food and water for them the night before). Then my exH said he'd pop in and feed them for the next two nights and we were home the day after. BUT he left dried food for them and NO WATER (I can't believe he could be so stupid). We arrived home and my big cat was very thirsty but ok. The little one is very poorly. We found her meowing into the empty water bowl. Her eyes are filmy and she was staggering and her coat looks awful. We called the emergency vet who told us to keep an eye on her (she did drink a lot of water when we filled her bowl). Her gums were pink but dry and sticky and the pinch test showed her skin returning very slowly. My daughter stayed up all night on the sofa with her and this morning the cat seemed worse. Very lethargic with filmy eyes and can't jump or walk properly. She shook her little head and fell over. She weed on the rug and there is blood. We have an appointment with the vet in three hours, the earliest we could get. My daughter is distraught and I'm trying to keep her calm but the cat seems really poorly. Can any of you help with some reassurance or experience of this type of thing?

How awful for you! The blood in wee sounds like kidney damage, which would be expected alongside dehydration. I haven't experience of kidney failure with a kitten, but I have with an elderly cat - he had to go on a drip for a few days, but did make a full recovery. His symptoms were just as you describe - staggering and so forth. I do hope your little girl is OK.

Generally you can survive 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water and 3 weeks without food. I think the little one will be fine but as she is little it’s affecting her more than older cat. They may put her on IV fluids and get her to rest for a day or so and she will be back to normal. Try not to worry; I’m sure she will be ok. Just in need of hydration, rest and tlc. Blood in urine could be a uti caused by dehydration. Good luck at the vets. X

I've never experienced this but hopefully your kitten will be ok and make a full recovery Flowers

Hi everyone

Thanks for all your replies. She is back from the vet - still poorly but had an antibiotic injection and anti-inflammatory injection. She's got a UTI and bad stomach because as the water got lower and both cats were lapping it, it gets a nasty film on it apparently. She's out of the woods and drinking and eating a tiny bit.. Her eyes are better, that was a scary thing, they got a weird sheen on them and were half-closed. She's still a bit unsteady on her feet but getting better. As for Ex-H - just typical. Prob came in and threw the food into a bowl and out again without any thought. That's the kind of thing that made him an ex. Thanks for all your good thoughts for our little girl x

Glad little kitty is on the mend, her eyes may have been the third eye which shows when they are poorly

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/03/2020 21:11

You can just imagine the bacterial soup she was having to drink.

Poor kitten, I’m so relieved for you all. I’d look into local cat hotels for next time. I liked knowing where mine was all week.

TheMemoryLingers · 10/03/2020 21:12

So glad to hear she is on the mend.
