White cats - can I please see yours

Smile every cat is welcome, of course.

This is my girl Dolly, 8'ish years old, from the streets of Spain. I found her in the middle of the road when she was 4 weeks old. A painfully shy girl, but with a quiet confidence. Most other cats sense her shyness & fear and treat her very badly, indeed. However, he has managed to make friends with our more recent strayboy, who is an absolute gentleman 😻

Is your white cat deaf? Mine isn't. What sort of personality does he/she have?

Here's mine. He has a blue eye and a green eye. He was a stray and completely wild - I was feeding him in the garden for 8 months before we could catch him.

Here's mine. She's a rescue from CPL, very deaf and very, very noisy - all the time. Check out the toe beans Grin

TranquilityofSolitude, I get really upset thinking white cats being strays. I think it's because they seem so ethereal and should be treated accordingly.

UltimateIrritant lovely toe beans and pink ears.

This is Charley or Le Char as we call her. I got her for free off Facebook in 2013 she was about a year old and not spayed, and had already had a litter of kittens. Her owner said she was moving house and wasn't allowed pets in her new house but I found out after that she got another cat and then a dog once she had moved Hmm.

Char has 2 different colour eyes but is def not deaf. She also has bad eyes from time to time as the vet suspects she had cat flu as a kitten and it flares up every now and again in upper respiratory tract infections.

The much loved Yuri who died from a genetic heart disease at Xmas aged 18 months. He got me through a serious illness and we miss him hugely. Yuri was such a character; he could play fetch, he was the best goalie with a ball and his favourite game was chasing receipts. The sofa was his domain and my partner was banished from it. I loved the way he would gallop towards me from across the garden when it was bedtime. Very therapeutic writing about the very fine feline. RIP.

So many beautiful cats. I adopted my cat nearly 5 years ago as her original owners didn’t want a deaf cat who needed to be kept indoors.

My DD’s 3. Fitz is the white. For a long time we thought he was deaf, but he just can’t be arsed to listen. He can hear just fine when my other DD is on the phone to her sister and comes tearing through to talk to her. Simmons is the one with the beauty spot, they’re brothers, then Schroedinger.
After she had leukaemia my daughter unfortunately was left badly disabled and unable to climb the 70 stairs to our flat, her and her boyfriend have a bungalow and “the boys” moved in with them.

This is one of my foster cats, obviously he was very deprived when he was with us, the standard of box provided was very poor.

This thread ❤️- so many beauties! I had only ever once met a white cat before we got ours. She is the least deaf creature around, and can hear a packet being opened from three gardens down. She’s six, a massive pest in the mornings, but a total joy.

Want2beme · 01/03/2020 15:46

GenuineKlatchianPottery, selective hearing, typical catGrin My vet tried to convince me that my girl is deafConfused. I soon showed him! Your DD's got a beautiful trio there.

VivaLeBeaverhe's a beaut!

Judystilldreamsofhorses lovely pink toe beansGrin. Mine's a pest during the night, running around like a loon.

Not deaf. Rescue kitten so don’t know his background.

Q1w2e3 · 01/03/2020 17:49

They’re so gorgeous! They all look like cats from fairy tales.
I didn’t know white cats are often deaf - why is that?

VivaLeBeaver · 01/03/2020 20:27

Lack of melanin in the ear cells when developing causes the cells to not form properly leading to deafness.

More common if the cat has blue eyes as well as being white. Happens in dogs as well.

Didiusfalco · 01/03/2020 20:35

Aww @OrcharD14 how could anyone not want her with that sweet little face!

TW2013 · 01/03/2020 20:49

A rare moment of sibling harmony. He has yellow eyes and definitely not deaf when it is food or time to go out. Though will happily ignore me when I call him in.

My boy ❤️ He isn’t deaf (although does suffer from selective cat deafness as most cats do Grin). We’ve had him 5 years this month. So lovely to see all the other white kitties out there

It's lovely to see all these white cats. I don't often see them IRL.

I met a lovely white boy in a pub once. He had thumbs!
