How many is too many? Going from 2 to 4 cats.

Hello fellow cat lovers,

I have found myself in a situation where I have offered to rehome two 12 year old sibling cats. I already have two cats who have recently started to get on quite well. Is it absolute madness to bring in two more?

Is four too many?

I've got 4 cats and have my first child on the way. Only thing i don't like is everyone seems to think i should get rid of them as they all think they will maul my child to death.. i know what to do in that situation i am capable!! 😂 if you think you can cope with 4 then do it, no different to 2 just more expensive food bills!

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/02/2020 19:41

We had 4 growing up, occasional skirmish but it wasn’t crowded.

You need to have space and at least n (the number of cats) plus one of litter trays, feeding stations, watering sites and beds. I'd also recommend feliway by the gallon.
I have 7 cats all co-habiting happily.

Thanks for your messages. You've made up my mind. They're coming this afternoon!

I've already got 3 litter trays so I'll get 2 more. I've got extra food and water bowls, already have cat trees, scratching posts etc.

Does anybody have any tips on introducing them? As they're already bonded and close, will it be easier or more difficult to introduce them to my current two?

I know one of my cats will be delighted but the other (my first cat) was quite hard work when introducing the second cat into the house.

When we introduced two to the other two, one cat wasn't bothered but one cat would hiss, spit and scare them away 😭 we kept them separate for a little while (a few weeks) and got them used to eachothers scents, now they are all great together! I can't remember if it has already been mentioned but use Feliway plug ins aswell! I suppose every cat is different, they might all take to eachother instantly.. but then again they might not 😫 well done for doing it, one thing i do know is that you won't regret your decision!

bodgeitandscarper · 26/02/2020 11:24

Ive got six, all get along well apart from two females who like slappy fights. They both sleep on the same bed though, so cant be too bad! Gradual introductions are the way forward I find.

They're here! I did it! I am the proud roommate of FOUR cats.

They're so lovely and have both settled in immediately, already purring and letting me stroke them. I'm not sure my other two have even noticed yet but for now the new cats are in their own room with Feliway Friends plugged in all the over the house.

Aw thats really sweet of you. Did they belong to family? Its so nice you are there for them.

GoldLeafTree · 26/02/2020 20:35

@eachandeveryone Yes they came directly from a family who wanted to rehome them after having them since birth due to allergies, such a shame for them but great for me, I'm in love with them already!

They've already sat on my lap and have eaten but not been to the toilet yet. It feels so mean keeping them shut in the spare room but it's a big room and they've got lots of hiding places, cat beds, scratching post etc and I've spent all afternoon sat in there

My DH is allergic so we compromised and got four (as the saying goes) Honestly? I'd have 10😻😻😻😻😻😻😻

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/02/2020 20:48

Marriage is about compromise. Good compromising there.

cousinboneless · 26/02/2020 20:51

I had 9 at one point. No regrets Grin

Want2beme · 26/02/2020 21:47

I always seem to have 3. Their fur drives me bananas, but that's allGrin

Good luck with your new buddies.Smile

Photo please!

BillywilliamV · 26/02/2020 21:52

We have four, any less is not enough frankly!

bodgeitandscarper · 27/02/2020 06:57

Ooh, enjoy Pickwick!

bodgeitandscarper · 27/02/2020 07:00

Oops, sorry I mean Gold!

nearlyfinished1moreyear · 27/02/2020 07:07

I have 4 Smile. It's more expensive regarding food, vets, flea and worm treatment (1 dog aswell)! My OH isn't keen on 3 of them but thats a massive improvement from not liking cats to begin with Wink. Enjoy your new additions.
