Chronic ear problem

Just a bit of background first. We rescued our cat about 6 months ago. She had apparently been living as a stray having been abandoned by her previous humans to fend for herself. We understand she was in a very poor state when found, and was taken in to a vet who treated her free of charge initially.
Now she is having the best love and care. She has now been diagnosed with Chronic gingivostomatitis but is currently coping well with the very few teeth she has left. She is under ongoing care of the vet for this. We’re awaiting result of bloods for Fiv and other chronic viral infections.
To get to the point! She has filthy filthy ears. Vet says no mites present and no evidence of infection (though has been treated for this) We've been flushing with an ear cleaner the vet gave us, but there is no sign of it clearing. She is head shaking so it is bothering her. The wax just keeps coming and coming. The vet has said he will investigate this further once mouth has improved a bit.

Has anyone else come across this? Can’t find anything online apart from treating mites or infection.

I wonder if it’s ear polyps one of our cats had it and ended up having her middle ear removed as the polyps were a constant source of ear infections

One my childhood Persians suddenly got a mucky ear and it was infected. The vet got a MASSIVE pair of forceps, wound gauze around them and proceeded to sweep them around inside his ear.

It looked brutal but he was loving it. Then he had drops.
