Guilt over cat death

Otis was the first pet we got when I moved out with my partner 14 years ago, he was the biggest softie.
In early Jan 2020 he started peeing outside of the litter tray and we took him to the vets, they treated him for a kidney infection & he got better for a few days, then went downhill...weight dropped off, he wasn't eating and generally looked miserable....the sparkle in his eyes had gone. I called the vet last night & they told me to bring him in at 5pm, the vet was lovely, said she wanted to give IV fluids & do some blood work to establish what was going on. At 7pm the vet called back to say the blood work showed kidney failure & the kindest thing would be to PTS 😪
I know this was the right decision, but my guilt at not being there to snuggle him in his final moments is killing me, he was my baby before I had my babies 😭
Sleep tight my lovely boy 💔

That is sad, he sounds like he was a very much loved member of your family. He knew you loved him and will be forever in your thoughts. Are you going to have a little ceremony for him.

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/01/2020 16:25

I’m quite shocked they didn’t let you go in to be with him tbh.

You always feel guilty when you pts but you can’t let them go into full kidney failure to die. You did the right thing, cats hide discomfort really well so he must have been really poorly to show it.

im so sorry, that really does suck.
Its awful when we lose a much loved pet, and it sounds like the way it happened, didnt allow you to get any closure. Im really sorry x

Thanks everyone, I didn't expect him not to come home, initially admitted for IV fluids and blood work, when they called to say they think PTS is the best option i had both kids in the bath and couldnt get back to the vets to be with him....didn't want him to suffer anymore whilst hanging on for me to arrive 😔 but I do wish I could have held him and made him feel safe, one final furry cuddle ❤

When your caught on the hop like that you make a snap decision and you did what was best for him.

SoulStarS · 23/01/2020 18:33

Please don’t feel guilty. You made a decision for his best interest, in that moment, even if you weren’t ‘physically’ there, rather than risk him experiencing even more pain. That is love. He was loved his whole life. I’m sorry OP. Be kind to yourself Flowers

So many people have a animal and just basically ignore it. You are feeling like this because you were a loving pet owner. The more you love the harder it is.

I really appreciate all of your kindness, feeling a little delicate and your words have really helped!! He was the cat of a lifetime & we'll always remember the happy times 🐱🐈❤

He is so gorgeous! You did the right thing by putting him to sleep even though it may not feel like it right now. He isn't in pain anymore and that is what matters, think of all the great memories he gave you and think positively ❤️ lots of love

So sorry Flowers

We sadly lost our 17 year old cat to kidney failure a few weeks ago.

I really though she might have had a urine infection but she had lost some weight so i was concerned. They were unable to take blood as her blood pressure was so low & it was decided to put her to sleep there & then. It was such a horrible shock. I felt absolutely awful but the vet was lovely & said cats are very good at hiding it.

I don't feel like I managed to give her much comfort at her last moments but it was calm, quiet & swift.

I'm sure your vet would have made your lovely boy comfortable x
