Not had a cat for years , do cats purr by themselves or like the photo, in the company of other cats?

@tanstaafl cats purr for a whole host of reasons by themselves and in company. The saddest purr is the one they do when they are really sick, it's a self soothing purr. They tend to sit really still with a fixed focus ahead and just quietly thrum. It's generally not a good sign
