The cat isn't getting any better (kidneys)

He will only eat applaws mousse with hot water

If I stop the appetite stimulant he stops eating, if I offered special kidney food he stops eating

He's very constipated and on lots of lactulose

He is sick occasionally and gets and anti-sickness med for a few days, he also has a protein reducing thing

He is sleepy (always is in the winter) snuggly, seems pretty ok in himself and the vets is concerned but not worried; and would like us to try senior food rather than the mousse

Is there anything else we can do?

Much need eats Kattovit dry food, which is renal, but ordinary wet food. He's on Fortekor and Pronefra, plus Ipakitine sprinkled on his food. He was briefly on semintra, but that did not suit him at all. I tried all sorts of kidney foods, but he wouldn't touch them.

Yes he's on Ipakitine - that's the powder I mix in

Bloody cats!

Have you had a chat with the vet about the food as I might be wrong but I thought applaws was a complimentary food so the vet might need to add in some supplements to make sure he is getting everything he needs which might pick up his energy levels.

Will he eat any dry food, my girl absolutely hates the wet kidney food but Iv managed to find a kidney biscuit (once she is off my knee I'll get the name for you!) she will eat, for her medication Iv found the little 50g pouches of gourmet mon petit or Sheba In gravy 50g.
I know not having a full complete kidney diet will mean her kidney (she's only got one left!) disease will progress but I'd rather she had a nicer life but shorter time than ruin her last few months probably not years to be honest by battling with her to eat food she hates.

He has a kidney dry food which he will eat, but just dry food makes him constipated!

We are settling down I think, a tin of applaws over the day - free access to dry

The meds he will take most of the time - I guess I'd rather he was on less lactulose!

I've went through CKD with my boy. I think you just have to give them what you can, yes try some senior food, but let it go if he's not interested. Would he drink watered down cat milk? Towards the end my boy would only eat the odd bit of chicken and Webbox lik-y-lix chicken.

You might have a good few months left with your boy, but the last week my boy starting holding his front paws up, and seemed a bit wobbly. His eyes were also sunken. I just looked at him one day and couldn't see what he'd enjoyed about his day. Not trying to upset you, but I know making that decision is so hard but you get to the stage when you know it's right.

Sorry I haven't replied - I don't really want to think about it :(

None of us do, it used to make me cry to think my about my cat dying, then he did & you somehow get through each day.

It’s really hard though.

tinytoast · 23/12/2019 11:53

It doesn't sound like hes very happy.

Would it be kinder to put him to sleep maybe?

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/12/2019 12:09

Would he eat raw food? Or would that be an offront to a Siamese of his breeding?.

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/12/2019 12:50

Affront?

KatyMac · 23/12/2019 16:28

I think he is stubborn rather than unhappy!
He would do this when offered food he didn't want before he was ill

Wet 'dry' food is also greeted with stubborn real to eat any new wet food - at least he still eats his dry food

And he bombs around the house chasing shadows and looking for a warm lap

I will monitor him but he does seem happy

Well if we wanted compliant let’s we’d buy a dog wouldn’t we 🐶

KatyMac · 23/12/2019 22:27

A friend tapped his knee tonight to call the cat up, Flynn looked and him turned and walked away jumped on the sofa walked along the back to the radiator, round the back of DH's chair to churp in the friend's ear asking to sit on his knee

Accept an invitation - no way; request demand attention that's my cat!

Compliant? He has DH carrying him to his food instead of coming when we tap the bowl only to eat the whole thing (if it's mousse, with hot water, but not the chicken one!) And yet he can smell cooked chicken from the end of the garden!!
