Has anyone cat-proofed their garden?

So after the devastating loss of our 3 year old cat on Saturday night to a car (which I’m still crying about), I’m terrified now about letting our other two cats out. Have locked the cat flap for now. How does cat-proofing a garden work, what happens with trees, extensions etc? Thanks

Why not get an older rescue house cat? 🐈

You can get cat fences which means they can't get out the garden . They lean inwards and the cats can't get a grip on them to get out .

We have fenced in part of our garden. About 20x8 meters. It is so much better than being nervous about traffic or them getting lost.

Ours looks something like the picture, 2 meters high (against a hedge to one side) and a vertical piece of fence at the top (30-40 cm), if that makes sense. No trees near the fence either and we have doors is ours.

But if your cats are used to roam freely, I would suggest that they stay in for a while and slowly get them used to the confinement.

Ours is from Sanctuary SOS. It's a fence top system made up of brackets and mesh with an overhang. Trees, sheds, extensions etc. also need it as otherwise they could be used as an escape point.

I know friends who've done it quite cheaply as DIY version, just depends on how complicated your garden is and what your existing fences are like (and your DIY skills).

Yep we used Katsecure as it’s more attractive than the mesh systems. Kept our cats in the garden successfully for 3 years now.

I saw the katsecure but I’m sure I saw on their website that they had a report of a cat getting into a secured garden but not out again.

If we get another cat it will be a Bengal and it would hurt an intruder.

I’ve never had another cat come in. Mine are placed just above and just below the fence and cats won’t jump down from it as it feels insecure under their feet. They walk along the fence and tease my girls who can’t get to the them though.

Maybe it fell in more than jumped.

I had my garden cat proofed years ago, inward facing netting on top of the fence. I had it done professionally and it cost a few thousand. I did it because my neighbours at the time were so shitty about my cats in their gardens and I was worried for my cats safety.

My cat Shadow worked out how to break out in around an hour so that was a total waste of money.

You are better off getting a catio attached to the house. The fencing is quite uglu. That way they can enjoy being outdoors but it's safe. You can get a really big one if you need to.

Also several other cats got in and couldn't get out with the fencing which was a disaster.

Did you complain to them @madcatladyforever? For the price of it you expect kitty prison.
