3.6 year old Dd keeps picking kitten up 😩

Demelza is 18 weeks now and has grown a big part of our family.

We have a 3, 10 & 12 year old. Demelza won’t stay out of the girls room πŸ™ˆ when they all go upstairs to play she shoots upstairs and meows until she’s let in the girls room. She jumps straight on to 3 yr olds bed and plays with her and her teddies. Dd LOVES her. She will happily let Demelza climb all over her, but she’s started picking her up 😩.

Demelza doesn’t seem bothered and only a few times Iv heard her meow for her to stop. But I’m worried it will cause dcat to become mean! She has barely scratched Dd3.

Again dd12 won’t stop taking photos with her πŸ˜‘πŸ˜‘ she adores her and dcat will constantly be on her on the sofa, purring away.

What do I do? I’m thinking about starting time out for dd3 when she picks her up after telling her not too!

😩

They grow really fast so another month and she should be big enough to get away.

I would remove kitten and keep her with you playing with a toy when the 3yo goes upstairs. She’s too young to understand the kitten wants to get away.

If the cat is insisting on being with them, I really don't think it's a problem.

AllYouGoodGoodPeople · 09/12/2019 13:09

If the cat likes it, there's not much you can do. If the cat's had enough, DD will learn.

My cat flinches if I even look at her but will run up to DD so that DD can put her on her shoulders and hold her upsidedown like a little baby Grin

Thanks all!

I wouldn’t be able to stop picking her up either. Grin.

She is a darling. Apart from when she attacks the rug/your feet on the rug πŸ˜©πŸ˜‚

Awwww....

I have fond memories of the late SoupKitten when DD was about 2. We had to keep telling DD "Head at the top!" As she would end up holding her upside down.

(It wasn't that often and DD wasn't alone with the kitten - no felines were hurt!)

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 12/12/2019 09:08

I think Demelza has landed on her feet paws.

Let your DD pick her up and cuddle her. It's fine.

catlady3 · 12/12/2019 09:09

Could you show your daughter how to pick up the cat safely and teach her a little bit about signs the cat is getting uncomfortable and what to do? Cats won't put up with things they don't like so she wouldn't demand being let in if she didn't enjoy their company.

HotCrossPun1 · 12/12/2019 09:10

Aw she’s adorable 😊 If she’s choosing to be there then she must be ok with it.

I used to read this to my dc years ago. It’s a lovely story about being gentle with a new kitten.

bluebluezoo · 12/12/2019 09:10

Ahh she's a a tortie :). Not a lot you can do with that one.

Leave them to it. They'll work it out. Just keep an eye on your youngest that she isn't being too rough, and try to teach her that if the cat is wriggling/meowing she wants to be put down. Also that kittens have sharp claws so be careful.

sashh · 12/12/2019 09:11

Trust me if Demelza wanteds to get away she would.

Wait until you see her in a dolls dress. Cats put up with a lot more from children than they do adults.

Foxton20 · 12/12/2019 12:00

Omg a dolls dress Xmas Grin

She already sits in the dolls pram and lets Dd push her around πŸ˜‚

Ok that’s adorable. Just encourage gentle handling, model it for her. If the cat doesn’t want to be picked up DD will soon learn.

DS is also 3, he is banned from picking the kittens up as he kept dropping them when they squirmed (obviously not from a height just from his waist) but is wonderful at playing with them, stroking them etc.

AllYouGoodGoodPeople · 12/12/2019 13:27

Our cat had kittens when I was 4 and there are all sorts of photos of me with them in my pockets and them in my dolls house and pram Grin
