Litter tray linings

We've got a lovely new rescue kitten who uses her litter tray. All good.

Except I stupidly bought several packs of tray liners and she just scratches through them until they're totally shredded so there's bits of plastic getting in the way.

So then I took to lining the tray with the liner and then some newspaper to minimise the bits of shredded plastic... and of course now I get bits of shredded paper mixed in with the litter.

I'm sure I'll find some combo eventually that agrees with the cat and me (who does all the cleaning out in our family ). But what do you guys use to line the tray? To make it easier to wrap up and dispose of each week when I do the weekly change & clean? (Obviously I do the daily disposal of poo too.) Shall I give up on the plastic liners entirely and stick with newspaper?

I'm currently using Cat's Best clumping litter, which is ok but kitten seems to track a lot of it out of the tray (the tray has a lid). I've just ordered a mat to put outside the tray to hopefully catch some of the litter.

So tell me your litter tray set ups please!

I don't use any liners. They all just get torn and its a waste of time.

I just use a clumping litter and remove the wet bits as needed. Poo gets scooped ASAP.

No liner here either. Use world’s best cat litter which is a clumping one.

I don't use anything to line the tray - cat would always scratch it and the wee would get trapped underneath and then stink.

Clumping litter (Sainsbury's) - no need for a liner.

Thank you all. Also, do you wash the whole tray regularly? Mine is too big to fit into the sink, so currently using some Method cleaner around the entrance and lid.

No liners here, cats rip them up etc. We use Morrison's light weight litter, one cat hates clumping litter. Scoop the poop as they do them then a complete change every third day. We do a full clean on change day, tip all litter into a fresh bin bag then put disinfectant in the trays take the trays to the shower and scrub them out, dry and fill with fresh litter, all three cats then proceed to poop in all three trays within 5 min 🙄

Non clumping for a kitten - they might eat it and it would clump in their tummies. No liner. Scoop poo as soon as. Change litter weekly.

I clean trays in the garden - first with pet safe disinfectant then rinse with the hose.

Yep, liners are a waste of time. I have a tarpaulin liber in my Modkat flip. But only because it's impossible to empty easily if it doesn't have one. When I wears out I'll buy a smaller tray as i don't like it.

I never use a liner. Cats best smart pellets dont track as much or worlds best is ok too. Natural clumping litter is ok for kittens, its clay based that can be an issue.

For cleaning I use a litter tray spray and kitchen roll
