Poorly kitten

My kitten (13 weeks) is poorly. He was very lethargic last night and off his food. He didn’t want to play with his sister - I heard of! Anyway, I took him to the vet today and he has a temperature. She was concerned because he’s only little, doesn’t go outside yet, up to date with vaccines and worm treatment. She has done some blood tests and the first lot (checking kidneys, blood glucose, etc) are fine. The second lot (looking at white cell count, etc) are in tomorrow. He ate this evening - but I ended up feeding him. About 2/3 of a kitten food pouch in the end which the vet was pleased about when she rang this evening. I’m wondering whether there is any chance he might have picked up my awful cold. I was laid very low for about 4 days and never suffer like this, so it really was a bad dose. Is that bonkers?
The vet has warned that it’s possible it could be something more sinister - possibly inherited from his mum. I’m ready for possible bad news, but also wondering if he might have caught a human virus .....

Unheard of, not I heard of

It’s very unlikely. Very virulent strains of flu can jump between species, but the common cold doesn't
Hope he’s better soon

Hello! How is this little one doing, did you get the rest of the results today? Good sign that he is eating.

He is still a poorly boy. He had a little to eat this morning when I fed it to him, but has remained in a similar state. His second lot of blood results showed nothing. The vet had enough blood to also screen for viruses. He doesn’t have leukaemia or AIDs but has tested positive for coronavirus. However, his other blood work doesn’t show anything that they would expect from a cat with FIP as yet. Nor does he have physical symptoms other than the temperature and lethargy. It is possible that the coronavirus is a bit of a red herring and that there is a bacterial infection or something else going on. After chatting to the vet, I decided to have him in hospital tonight. He has a drip and is getting antibiotics. I spoke to them at 9 pm and he hadn't eaten anything. I have everything crossed that he will be ok, but I don’t feel very hopeful. I’m just amazed at how quickly a bouncy happy kitten can become so unwell

Haven't got anything valuable to add but I hope he's feeling better soon. He's extremely cute!

Poor little mite. Fingers crossed for him. Do you have insurance?

Hamsterian · 03/10/2019 05:35

Keeping my fingers crossed for your gorgeous boy!

He is still poorly today. He will need to stay in hospital and if there is no improvement, they will scan him tomorrow to see if there are signs of showing in his organs. I feel so sad for him. I feel very sad for all of us, but he is the one suffering. He is a super kitten and has already brought so much to our family. His sister is still well so I am hoping she will continue to be. We are giving her lots of love and attention. She has never been without her brother, even coming to his appointments with him. But she can’t be with him in hospital in case she pulls his drip out. I have told his previous foster carers and the shelter we rescued him from in case any other kittens from his litter become poorly. It’s so terribly sad. I am still hoping that it isn’t FIP and that he can pull through this, but deep down I think that it might be awful news.
