Does anyone else’s cat chew on nothing?

During the last few weeks in the evenings I have noticed my cat (1yo) noisily chewing with nothing in her mouth. She does this for a few minutes, she vomited after doing it on one occasion (she has quite thick hair so gets occasional hairballs) but generally she stops after a minute or so and goes back to whatever she was doing.

She is generally healthy and behaving normally otherwise. She has hyperesthesia which is well controlled with gabapentin.

Any ideas? Weird cat behaviour or do I need to get her teeth checked?

Sounds like she might have some fur stuck in her mouth and she's trying to swallow it. My long hair does this.

My cat does this job st before she throws up. It gives me time to get some paper towels.

We always get a 4 minute warning for sick. She makes the oddest noise - she sounds like a child saying ‘mumumumumum’ so we know to get her away from rugs and soft furnishings. The first time she did it was quite alarming, like we had a third child we didn’t know about shouting for us

Grinding teeth can be a sign of pain, apparently, so if the chewing might possibly be grinding teeth, keep an eye on her and possibly take her to the vet.

One of ours is doing that at the moment, we think she needs her teeth looked at again. She's always had problematic teeth, she's had half of them out at this stage. She's very drooly as well and her breath is hellish.
