Kitten proofing the house!

I'm just starting to think about things I need to do to make my house safe for our new kitten (arriving in October) and would appreciate any tips. We have open bannisters upstairs that I think need addressing and an open chimney too.

I'd also like to know if there are any steps I can take to protect the house from the kitten (e.g. cables, sofas etc).

Any ideas based on past experience very welcome Wink!

Chimney - definitely needs sorting. I've never known bannisters to be a problem. Cables are also fine generally - although one did once bite through my printer cable - but then it was dangling provocatively between the laptop on the table and the printer on a nearby low shelf.

Maybe get throws to protect the sofa from scratching. That's all I've got.
