My cat is crapping next door

My cats have always used a litter tray but recently one of them has started doing his poos right in the middle of my next door neighbours garden. They are very nice folk and have mentioned it to me very politely and understand cats are not controllable. It's very embarrassing and I'm not sure what to do about it! Does anyone have any tips? I've obviously offered to go round and clear up for them but they've said no don't worry...

oh dear, maybe another cat or a fox has been there and scared him, it might be a territorial thing, is he neutered?
they could water spray him when they see him doing this, that frightens them off but doesn't hurt them, put slices of lemon peel on the grass as cats don't usually like citrus.
have they got separate trays, one each and a spare one, all away from their food and drinking bowls
do your cats get on well together, any fights recently

How did you train her to do that?

He's neutered.

Their garden is a beautiful expanse of pristine green lawn and the little brown mountains are right in the middle. So Blush

I will try the citrus trick. I've already told them to squirt him but they seem to think that's cruel. He is however terrified of their wooden decorative owl so maybe that could be deployed..

The owl sounds a great ideaGrin

What's in your garden? Can you make a couple of foot square of soft earth, maybe with a bit of sand mixed in? That would generally be a cat's preferred sort of ground to use and if you could provide it that might solve the problem.

I always keep a few areas of soil in our garden loosened with a hoe so they are always ready to be used. We have one corner affectionately known as "poo corner" by DD. All the cats we've had have been happy to go in those areas. We do have a tray indoors too which is used rarely.
However 1 or 2 neighbourhood cats like the new slate we have out from to crap on......
