Cat catching birds

My cat has form for bringing in dead creatures and the odd live mouse. I catch the live mice and release them but everything else is usually dead.

This morning there was a live chick. Looked in shock but alive. I put it sheltering under the hedge outside and locked the cat inside. I suspect the chick will die because its parents won't find it in time.

This has really shaken me up and I feel horrible. Poor little bird. She doesn't stand a chance with grown birds but fledgling as so vulnerable.

Any suggestions of how I can stop her? She won't stay inside. She throws herself at windows if kept inside.

I doubt I'll get another pet cat after this morning. I've only ever had cats in rural areas before, this is my first townie cat.
