Kitten gone off wet food and searching for water

DKitten is 5mo old.

The last couple of days he's been eating very little (if any wet food).

He's been eating his biscuits, but as these are making him thirstier he's needed more water.

However, he's not (as far as I'm aware) been drinking from water bowl and has been jumping up to kitchen sink and into bath to try and find water.

We've cleaned his water bowl numerous times and I've also put an extra bowl of water in the bathroom, in case he didn't like water near his food.

He seems otherwise well in himself.

Any suggestions / advice appreciated.

Cats can be very picky drinkers!
What material is the bowl made of? Metal and ceramic is better than plastic. Plastic can leave a taste which they don't like.
You can put some tuna brine in the water to encourage him to drink, or if things get desperate, get a little fountain. It works for cats who like running water.
Also a very flat dish can help them drink more than a bowl. They like to drink from shallow places like puddles and a flat dish is more similar to that than a bowl.

Thank you @Hamsterian. The dish in the kitchen is metal and the dish in the bathroom is glass.

A water fountain seems very indulgent Grin

Neither of ours will drink water from a water bowl or fountain. One shouts at us to turn on taps for her, or goes outside and licks moisture off leaves or the car roof. The other will find herself a puddle outside.

havenofwhiskers · 31/07/2019 09:20

He's being neutered in two weeks, so doesn't have access to outside yet.

I may try another brand of wet kitten food and see if he'll eat that.

He's just got into the bath again!

Ours has water out of our filter jug, he seems to prefer it.

thecatneuterer · 31/07/2019 15:56

One of mine will only drink from a cut lead crystal tumbler. Cats can be very picky

HelloJackieYouLookNice · 31/07/2019 16:00

Add soap. My kitten likes nothing better than soapy, stagnant shower water HmmGrinWink

(Disclaimer - don’t actually do this)

Fluffycloudland77 · 31/07/2019 16:27

Tcn, if anyone else had written that I would assume it’s a joke.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 31/07/2019 16:41

Mine will only drink out of a bowl that sits next to me in the living room or a glass in my bedroom. Hmm put it anywhere else and he will not drink it.

SagelyNodding · 31/07/2019 16:51

Our old cat would only drink out of 'human' glasses on the coffee table! The other one preferred a running tap. Current kitten likes kicking the condensation from the outside of cold water bottles! Finicky buggers, all of them! In my (limited) experience you just have to keep trying different things!

SagelyNodding · 31/07/2019 16:52

Licking not kicking lol

Nonstopbuttmachine · 31/07/2019 17:18

My little madam won't drink out of a bowl or from a running tap. Instead, she prefers to wait until I water the plants then dashes up and licks the leaves Confused

My old boy used to drink out of the swimming pool. Mmmm... chlorine Grin

Dippypippy1980 · 31/07/2019 20:20

Mine will only drink from a dripping tap or her water fountain.

The fountains aren’t expensive and provide them with moving water - I have never had a cat who will drink water from a bowl.

Have you tried cat milk? Mine will drink it from a saucer so she gets lots of fluids on hot days

MontStMichel · 31/07/2019 20:34

One of ours runs up to drink from the running tap, while we brush our teeth! I only saw the other one drink water for the first time in over three years last week, on the hottest day recorded!

Ours have wet food, but if I were worried about their drinking, I would get a water fountain.

MontStMichel · 31/07/2019 20:35

ITA with pp; they will drink cat milk out of a bowl!

Triskaidekaphilia · 31/07/2019 23:12

One of my cats will drink water from his bowl no problem. The other will only drink if it's:
In the bowl with a load of ice in there
Running from tap
My water that's been left on the table
In a tiny wine glass next to his bowl Hmm

My parents cat only eats dry food and most of the time he will only drink from the tap.

YesQueen · 01/08/2019 00:13

I'm beginning to think my cat is the odd one out. He drinks a decent amount of water. From his bowl which is near his food. And nowhere else Grin
My neighbours cat favours muddy grim looking puddles

We always leave water down in a bowl but all of our cats prefer to drink either from running taps or from puddles (apparently the dirtier the better) or the river.

TwistyTop · 01/08/2019 05:11

My cat gets a fresh bowl of filtered refrigerated water every morning. Never touches it. She chooses to drink my soapy hot bathwater and anything that gets spilled on the floor.

She's always been this way. Doesn't seem to have done her any harm?

Badcat666 · 03/08/2019 21:43

Mine have a water fountain, best thing ever. Both drink out of it at different levels.

However they also drink from:

The pond
Puddles
the dregs from my shower in the bath
My water glass
my mug to get to the cold tea I didn't drink
leftover milk from my cereal bowl but will not drink cat milk from same bowl

mad as a box of badgers they are sometimes.

BettaSplenden · 03/08/2019 21:52

My two have a fountain and they love it -it's indulgent and my mates take the piss but I'd rather the 20 quid for a fountain then the hundreds that kidney issues can cause (my old cat had severe kidney issues and sshe only drank from plant pot saucers in the garden (the dirtier the better Envy -not envy))

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 03/08/2019 23:25

DCat never eats wet food when it is hot.
But luckily he loves water - he drinks from taps, water bowls on the terrasse, puddles left after rain.
He also allows himself to get wet and then comes in to sleep on my chair.
