What cat breeds would you suggest? (House cat types)

Please could you help as I don't know the first thing about cats.

Two elderly relatives. One is an experienced cat owner. The other has early dementia but always loved cats. The main purpose is to provide a pet for petting and distraction for the dementia patient but the other relative loves cats and will do the cat caring.

Ideally looking for a house cat or a breed that will be happy to spend alot of time sitting on a lap being stroked and is affectionate rather than a wild rover who will be out all the time bringing in mice.

Also one that is not a big moulter or will require a lot of grooming.

Preference is for a young kitten so would buy from a reputable breeder rather than go to a shelter.

Are there particular breeds you'd suggest or recommend to avoid?

Yep, agreeing with everyone that an older rescue cat would be perfect. It's not about breed, some cats are more of a lapcat type than others and its not breed, colour etc. dependent. However an older cat would suit because of their energy levels will be more suited to cuddling up on the sofa rather than running around playing or hunting! Kittens are not particularly cuddly at all, they are scratchy, destructive and full of energy.

Also I hate to say this but unfortunately as a rescue volunteer I know of cases where people with dementia became confused and harmed their cats. Obviously they would never knowingly have done so but just didn't understand what they were doing. In one case the cat ended up with a broken leg, and in the other were given human medication. If the two people live together and the other person can supervise, it should be ok.
