Cystitis, what to do?

My male cat seems to have cystitis.

Last night I noticed him sitting to wee a lot and then not going, he then did it on the sofa and the doorstep, googled it and called the cet right away as I understand with males it's more urgent.

Took him to the emergency vet and they said the bladder wasn't full at all, so not blocked, come back tomorrow if he's still doing it.

This morning he was still doing it, managed to do a little spot, but not much.

Went to the vets, he said the bladder wasn't too full, but to keep an eye on him. Gave him and atiflam jab and some for the next few days.

He did another little spot, but no more. He's still trying from time to time, but nothings coming out.

How long until the antiflam will start to work? I've also put more water and a little apple cider vingar in his food.

Any help would be great.

You probably need antibiotics. Some vets seem reluctant to prescribe for cystitis (believing it to be entirely stress related I think). Some will. Antibiotics are the only way to clear my cystitis and in my experience they seem to be the way to go for cats too. Speak to your vet again.

I thought antibiotics, I even asked and he said no.

I'm a little annoyed too, as I'm due to go away for a wedding Friday, so timing was really important. It won't be easy for the person looking after the animals to get him to the vet.

I'm in a bit of a panic!

I suppose if you can’t get a sample for them to test they won’t want to prescribe, but mines always had them.

Could you try a different vet at the same practice?.

Hi OP, One of my family members was advised to crush a vitamin C tablet into her cat’s food (not sure of the science of why it works), but her cat would get regular cystitis and her vet didn’t want to give antibiotics and she swore by it for years. Worked for her cats who lived to be 20!

I’d check if you can overdose them, cats make their own vitamin c.

I think it’s only us and guinea pigs who don’t.

I gave them a call and they said this should be working and soon.

If he hasn't gone in a couple of hours I'm to give a call as he should have had a full bladder movement. I wasn't even told this, so had no idea of what kind of time frame I was looking for improvement.

I feel a bit mucked around, two trips so far, most likely another in Out of Hours, and then they'll mot likely feel him and say no blockage and come back tomorrow!

And I'm disabled, so getting there and back is taking a lot out of me!

He's also sleepy, but that could be the pain killer or the heat, but he's been asleep indoors the whole day, which is rare, if he's ever had to be kept in he's cried to get out.

OK, a little update, he's finally urinated, appeared to be a normalish amount too.

Ok, good. You can add water to wet food to subtly up their water intake.

To prevent this happening again, you could mix Cystease (other brands are available, think it was the cheapest version I found) into his food. You can also buy food specially designed for cats who are prone to getting cysitis. You could also mix a bit of water into his wet food.

Yes, he had a good amount of water added to his meal and earlier had chicken broth with it. Really trying to up the water in food.

He's gone back to trying without much success again. I'm guessing this is normal? Is it?

He has gone, so that means no blockage, I think that's what they were saying.
