Pain relief after being spayed.

My kitten has been spayed today, I paid before hand and when I picked her up I forgot to take my purse. They mentioned buying painkillers £20 just incase she needs them tomorrow. BUT my problem is I can't find my bank card (I'll probably find it 10 mins after posting this) to go back and buy some and now my friend has said none of hers ever needed extra the day after, and I really can't afford to pay out for something if its not going to be needed.

Did any of you find that your cat absoloutely needed the extra pain meds?

Off to find where the baby has hidden my card now 😩

I've never given extra pain meds - but I suppose it depends what they give her at the time of the op.

I'm not sure what they gave her, but I've got metacam for her. Seems to be that none of my friends have been recommended pain meds for after either. I don't want her to be in any pain though so if she needs them at least I have them. If she doesn't need them then I can cry about the money another day 😂

I did give my cat some but she was an adult and is quite sensitive. Plus it made her sleepy so she wasn't racing round like a loon!

Pretty sure they dose them up good and proper and chances are she wont need any more pain killers. Did the nurse go through after care with you on collection ? We were given a sheet for all of ours and they verbally went through it including signs she would be in pain/ discomfort and need to go back for more pain relief. Also we had follow up checks on day 3 and day 10 included in the price of spey.

I used pain relief for about 2 or 3 days after mine was spayed. I couldn't really afford it at the time but the vet did say I should get it. I'm glad I ended up getting it as she looked like she was in pain when she was walking. They gave her a dose before she came home and then I gave her some the next morning.

Some quite extensive studies have been carried out on post spay pain in cats and have found that they are in quite high levels of pain just mask it. There are subtle signs face shape, eye shape and body position.
Cats who have 5 days of meloxicam post spay do much better than those who don't.
If you consider a flank spay has had three layers of muscle cut, her uterus pulled out through her body wall I suspect in the same situation you'd be taking at least 5 days of pain killers.

@Lonecatwithkitten that was my thinking, I've had a csection and I know I was on pain relief more than 5 days. She has had it done through the flank. They did say cats tend to mask pain well, she's dosed up from the op and doesn't need any more till tomorrow. She's only a tiny little thing so they've had to mark the syringe as her weight isn't on there.

@DullPortraits yes they went through everything, it's when they recommended buying the metacam. They said to bring her back in on day 7. Unless there's any problems before then.

I'll give her a dose for the next couple of days and then see how she is on Friday. I don't want her to be in any unnecessary pain.
