Cat suddenly stopped using her litter tray

So, we adopted our cat last December and she had been great at using her litter tray (she's an indoor cat) but for the past two weeks she keeps pooping beside her litter tray rather than in it.

I regularly clean the tray, and haven't changed anything else in our apartment.

Does anyone have any suggestions to get her back to using it properly again?

Just to add, before we adopted her she had been kicked by kids and her tail no longer works- it just flops down. The vet didn't want to remove it as it isn't causing her any pain but could this all be linked?

Have you changed her litter! Which litter do you use?.

Hello! We use the crystals- she's had them since December so that's why it's really bizarre. My thought is maybe the tail is getting in the way. She is going on vacation (to the Cattery) this week and they have a vet on site so I'll ask for their opinion on this also. Thanks!

Ok, they’re quite rough on paws so it’s worth trying ultra clumping litter as it’s really soft on paws.

She might have decided she doesn’t like crystals anymore. I tried them on my cat and got a wtf look for my trouble.
