Abandoned cat dilemma

The shop across the street from me closed and the tenants left their lovely little cat behind. They’re not answering the owner’s calls and he has new tenants coming in so she has to go. Refuges are all full so her future is bleak.

I lost my 18 year old cat in December and still miss him terribly but enjoy the freedom to travel without worrying about booking a sitter. Next trip is for a week in mid-August.

I was thinking about another cat but not so soon. If I don’t, she won’t have very long.
What would you do?

Delurking. What a lovely thread. You have obviously been under the paw for sometime already.

SnowBrussels · 25/07/2019 14:45

No photo yet, she moved from the living room to the bedroom during the night so I’m letting her get her bearings there.
She hisses at me when I go too close but she ate, drank and used the litter box already!

That's a lovely thing to read. Lucky cat. Lovely you.

PocaNinja · 25/07/2019 22:30

Eating drinking and using litter box are all good signs! Probably best to let her come to you but Sounds like she will very soon. And yes pls- post a picture when you can get one

Lindy2 · 25/07/2019 22:35

You've done a good thing.
I hope she settles soon.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 25/07/2019 23:34

All sounds positive. Having had a few nervous ones the best thing I find is to ignore them and let them get their bearings. Their curiosity will get the best of them and they’ll come to you in the end. Give her space and time and she’ll come good Smile

Guiltypleasures001 · 26/07/2019 16:39

Any update op? Needs kitty pics 😁

boringlyboring · 26/07/2019 17:55

Didn’t take much persuading!Grin

Hope she is settling in well, and well done

SnowBrussels · 27/07/2019 15:41

Day 3 and she’s still in hiding! She’s eating, drinking and using the box. I’m waiting for her to come to me but starting to think ‘what do I do if she doesn’t settle?’ Patience...

She will settle don't worry. Well done OP think you are brilliant!

thecatneuterer · 27/07/2019 16:59

It can take weeks. She'll be fine. Is she neutered? (Apologies for sounding like a broken record)

SnowBrussels · 27/07/2019 17:44

@thecatneuterer That’s what my brother says too. I haven’t seen her in the flesh since Wednesday night.
I suspect she isn’t neutered but that will be taken care of soon. I’m in a 5th floor apartment and she won’t be going out anytime soon.

One of mine spent the first few days under a bookshelf in the spare room then weeks under the bed. I started putting wet food out and leaving the room, then gradually being around when it was out so she got used to me and trusted that I wasnt going to hurt her (dry food was always available). Eventually I sat a few feet away and ignored her whilst she ate, then let her come over and sniff me. I didn’t move towards her or try to touch her for weeks, just let her make the decision about what was comfortable. That’s the best approach ime

Vinorosso74 · 27/07/2019 21:36

It sounds positive. You could try reading aloud so she gets used to your voice.
Regarding neutering; a female on heat can go a bit crazy.and nay be super keen to get out in search of a randy tom cat. I would get her to the vet asap.
Look forward to photos!

First photo of little No Name hiding in the bottom of the wardrobe. She’s getting braver and is now eating in the kitchen!

Awwwww, I'm more of a dog person but I'd take her in no problem 😍.
