Introducing dog, my cat is sulking

I will probably get flamed.

I have a new rescue dog. My cat has lived with 2 other dogs, one was his best friend (sadly lost her a month ago). The new dog is so gentle, he totally ignores cats, no barking, no chasing and has lived with cats. My cat is refusing to come into the house or back garden. Earlier I spited him through the fence watching the dog, when the dog went near the fence the cat was hissing, do took no notice. Do you think he will eventually come home? It’s been almost 48 hours. The cat is obviously fine because I have seen him but I’m worried that he may not have access to water and it’s been really hot. I have placed a bowl out the front of the house and some food.

Hoping someone will tell me their cat did the same and eventually came home? 😐

Oh dear, that sounds so stressful.

Is it possible to lock the dog safely away in a room for a short while so you can spend some time with your cat at the end of the garden so he knows you still love him?

I’m sure he’ll realise it’s safe soon enough.

Then you must provide pictures!

I spent money on stair gates so the cat could have most of the house.

As I’m writing this the cat has crept through the back door and past the dog. Dog didn’t move. He’s ahead something to eat and snuck back out.

Well that was a tense moment. Cat walked straight up to the cat in the garden, dog was petrified, cat rubbed himself against the dog and then went to swipe the dog across the nose, the dog then hid behind me, cat made a few noises, dog then barked, cat ran, dog barked some more and that was that.
The cats now sat on the shed watching the dog. Dog is very confused but I guess it’s a start. I have no doubts that the dog would come off worse than the cat.

Sounds like progress to me!
