New carpet ... Scratching

I’m getting a new carpet and wanted to get a spray or something similar to stop my cat from scratching it, has anyone used anything that has worked? I’ve got scratch posts (that they love) but they also love getting their claws dug into the carpet!

Can't think of owt except Feliway. Or get some carpet samples and stick them onto something hard, your cat can scratch those.

It’s there instinct to scratch, , especially things that smell new.

I can’t think of anything other than PP’s suggestion to put carpet off cuts down in the hope they’ll shred those instead.
I’d like to have a new stair carpet myself but I know my cats couldn’t leave it alone even with strategically placed scratch posts so I’m not going to waste my money just yet.
I have tiles and laminate elsewhere.
Some cats are more inclined to shred carpet than others in my experience and our cats particularly destructive

Thank you all very much for your reply’s, I’ve just logged on and seen them. I’ll try the carpet cut offs, I didn’t think of that, thank you. Will look at Feliway too.

I got three of these for my boy and he hasn't scratched the carpet since. I put them near his favourite scratching spots and he took to them straight away. www.amazon.co.uk/AMZNOVA-Durable-Cardboard-Scratcher-Colors/dp/B06Y5PHB9S?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

We have a cardboard cat scratcher very similar to this. Gatsby likes it and uses it frequently.

Our three also have a cat tree, which has been very "well-loved". We actually are at a point where they would probably benefit from a new one.

We don't have too many issues with them scratching where they aren't supposed to do. Gatsby needs occasional reminders, but overall they are okay.
