How odd! Does anyone else's cat do this?

I've got a 6 and a half year old female short haired moggie. She was a stray when we took her in,aged approx. 4 -5 months, just over 6 years ago. Had her neutered about 2 weeks after we got her. She's mainly an indoor cat,as I live in a flat, but she does have access to a balcony in decent weather. She's always been a bit 'hot and cold' temperament wise, going from being extremely loving and affectionate, dribbling all over you and kneading like mad,to being stand-offish,and occasionally behaving like she wants to kill me,hiding and pouncing on my feet. We took this all as normal cat behaviour.
But just lately, she's started doing something that she's never done before,I've actually never witnessed any cat I've had do this. If I lay on my bed,she jumps up beside me and positions herself alongside my leg, then lifts her bum right up (facing me!),to the extent that her back legs are standing up,lifting her tail as she does so. All the while she's doing this, she's purring like mad and pushing herself against me. It's like the behaviour of a cat in season, but she's been neutered! She's only been doing this for the last 2 -3 weeks. Does anyone else's cat do this? And do you know why?

Yes,my friends cat does this,I find it most alarming as when mine does it he is getting ready to spray ( even though he's been done) I think you have to file it under 'Another weird and wonderful thing that cats do ' 😂

Oh! I didn't realise male cats did that when they're getting ready to spray! I've seen a cat spraying but not witnessed this behaviour beforehand.

Snorg does it but only in the bathroom next to the bath. I think she loves the bath mat and gets really exited by it!

Snorg was an ex breeding queen and still sticks her bum in the air if you tickle the base of her tail so I think that may have something to do with it.

This sentence makes me feel very anxious! Falls from windows/balconies are the most common type of illness or injury in indoor cats, why take the risk?

ALongHardWinter · 30/04/2019 18:40

LittleKitty I appreciate your concern, but worry not! I am on the first floor, and there is a flat shop roof literally a foot below the floor of the balcony. So even if she did walk along the balcony railing and slipped off,it is literally only a 6 foot drop.

Both of mine do that too, along with the site stray at work who we think is a neutered boy. So I don't think it's much to do with her having been a breeding queen, as that's 2 boys and an ex-feral girl doing it too.
