Does anyone own a furminator

My cat badly needs brushed but really doesnt tolerate it. She's old so cant groom much of herself these days and when she does, shes getting a mouthful of hair which is resulting in hairballs!! Ive tried normal brushes, zoom groom, a mit and nothing is getting rid of the dead hair. Im considering a furminator but they seem so expensive!!

I used one on elderly semi long haired. It was the only thing to do the job.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/04/2019 18:08

The cheaper non branded ones on Amazon are just as good.

Chancewouldbeafinethlng · 08/04/2019 18:10

Does she like being brushed? It can be a bit much if they don’t like it.

I have one and have to admit it is as good as it claims to be. I also use a tangle teezer which picks up a lot of hair.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/04/2019 18:14

My long haired Persian isn't keen on grooming but likes the tangle teaser.

Sunonthepatio · 08/04/2019 18:16

Marking for interest. I'd love to not have to pay the vet to manage this. Our Persian hates grooming.

Plump82 · 08/04/2019 18:21

Chancewouldbeafinething - no she hates getting brushed. Ive also tried a tangle teezer and it didnt do the job. My thoughts were i could get it done quicker with a furminator.
Toddlerteaplease - that's good to know. I looked on Amazon and it only seemed to show Furminators but ill have a proper look again.

Look for a deshedding brush rather than furminator

Toddlerteaplease · 08/04/2019 20:28

I've just removed enough fur to make a second cat using a dog grooming rake. It gets the undercoat off much better than a furminator.

RaisinRainbow · 08/04/2019 21:40

I have a Maine Coon cross ie masses of fur. Can be prone to matting and needs regular grooming to manage hairballs. I tried a furminator but she clearly found it stressful and it seemed to be ripping her fur out. Discontinued use of it.
I prefer a combo of a wire slicker brush and a moulting comb by Rosewood that has a similar yet more gentle effect to the furminator.

Sunonthepatio · 08/04/2019 22:27

@Raisinrainbow, can you say more, and link products, please?

StillMedusa · 08/04/2019 23:24

Two maine coons here... one who will not be groomed and one who will (mostly but being naughty at the mo)

They HATE the furminator.
I use a comb with rotating teeth

and a knot splitter

and some fine hairdressing scissors!

Toddlerteaplease · 09/04/2019 11:27

I use thinning scissors for actual trimming as it avoids the blunt home haircut look!

madcatladyforever · 14/04/2019 23:34

My cat hated the furminator. He was such a nightmare with grooming I eventually got a professional groomer to come in and do it.

MarthasGinYard · 14/04/2019 23:42

Bought one last month

Absolutely amazing, we were Shock at how brilliant it actually is.

Have binned all the other brushes.

I'd certainly invest.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/04/2019 00:14

I tried Cheddar with Snorgs grooming rake. She loved it! Couldn't believe it. She's not a fan of being groomed usually.
Ollie being groomed with a slicker brush gave me the idea to try it. Will get one for her.

spongedog · 15/04/2019 00:17

I have a Siamese and a friend recommended the furminator. The cat is not very keen and tries to bite it! I think he finds it a bit scratchy, so I dont do it very often. You can hear it slightly pulling the fur - I dont think it only picks up loose fur.

RavenLG · 15/04/2019 00:21

My parents have a husky and have a furminator. She hates it and doesn’t even mind brushing

Eatmycheese · 15/04/2019 00:23

Have three BSH cats and they love it
I could stuff cushions with what comes off them

MarthasGinYard · 15/04/2019 00:32

'I could stuff cushions with what comes off them'

Grin

It's incredible isn't it
