Cat acting strangely after neutering

I had my lovely little boy neutered today. I picked him up 3 hours ago and he’s been acting really strangely. I had expected him to be tired and wanting peace so I’ve packed dc off to my dm’s for a few hours. He’s been crying at ds1’s bed. Then he has dug out both his litter trays and scattered them absolutely bloody everywhere. Luckily I fully cleaned and scrubbed them this morning as I wanted them nice and clean so less likely to get his wound infected. He has also pushed all ds’s fossil collection off the shelf, he’s previously taken absolutely no interest in them before. And now he’s sat by his water drinker, he’s dragged a towel over to it and has proceeded to splash all the water from his drinker onto it. So he’s sat on a soaking wet towel and crying.

I can’t find anything online about cats suddenly being wankers after neutering. I understand he’s upset but he’s bloody trashing the house! Please tell me this will stop soon.

My boy was neutered today as well. I picked him up from the vet about 2pm and he is like a different kitten, being very affectionate and calm, I guessed he is still a bit out of it from the general.

Maybe he's just upset? Or in pain?

Can you calm him down by stroking him and get him to sleep on your lap?

Mine is like a different kitten too, I’m hoping it’s the GA still. Maybe he’s high? Did your vet give you any medicine to go home with? I thought they’d give me a bit more advice than they did but I guess it’s a very low level operation that all male cats have.

He’s purring when I stroke his head. He hasn’t come to climb on my lap yet which is unusual. I don’t want to pick him up I’m case I hurt him though.

Sometimes they give you metacam (painkiller) to take home but tbh he should still have painkillers in his system.

If you're worried I would call the vet for advice.

No advice from the vet really, just to leave him in peace for a couple of days.

I miss him trying to attack my legs when I walk past him.

I am assuming he is in pain and doesn't feel normal from the ga.

They often give them ketamine as part of the anaesthetic. That can make them act very oddly, as if they are possessed. That's probably what it is.

It'll be the drugs, as pp said ketamine is often used plus opiates such as methadone. He should be back to his normal self tomorrow.

I don’t doubt that he bloody hates me right now. He seems to have calmed down a bit now, he’s not wrecking stuff anymore. I thought he’d be dozy and grumpy but he hasn’t had a rest since he’s come home.

It’s the ketamine, mines the same. I’ve seen that wide eyed look before.

Keep him in a bit longer, took mine a good 36 hrs to act normal last time.

Magic had morphine and ketamine when she was ill with pancreatitis. She was completely stoned! Ketaminebis a brilliant pain killer though.

Yes one of mine has a really strong reaction to ketamine - it sends him totally loopy, as if he is hallucinating and he completely trashed everything. He was so bad after neutering the vets kept him in overnight as felt he needed to be contained!

He did go back to normal ( well cat normal ).

Gatsby climbed up on top of the kitchen cupboards a few hours after he was neutered. He had never done that before.

We have kids at work on ketamine. It's hilarious when they are away with the fairies.

I am pleased to say that since I got up this morning at 6.30am, my boy has been his normal attacking self. He has had many mad moments today where he has acted like normal (well, for him).

topbitch he’s seemed a lot better today thanks, glad your little boy has bounced back too. Mine is still chucking water everywhere for some reason though. I thought he’d be exhausted after the op but hardly slept last night at all. He’s been asleep pretty much all day today though.

Humans can take ketamine too. I’m sure it’s still taken today.

My first reaction when ours had a dental and was told the big eye look was ket was “ooh nice”.

So funny, mine played with her water fountain for ages when she came home. High as a kite!

She calmed down after a few hours.

He’s never taken any interest in his water fountain at all before, except to drink from it obviously. He was splashing it all over the place, sticking his head right in it. I’m glad to hear my cat isn’t the only one who goes mental after an anaesthetic.

Yup, humans still use ketamine. Sadly it is sometimes used as a street drug, but it does have medicinal uses. I've seen a few people who were on it for chronic pain as nothing else had worked.
