I had to take my 7 month old kitten to the vets as he had gunky eyes. I had a 10 min apt. and was given some gel for his eyes.
Cost £76. Is this normal or am I just at a very expensive vets?!!

Costs sound fairly normal. Vets have high overheads-wages, equipment, bills, rent etc.
Ours charge £29.50 for initial consultation (20 mins time slots). It did used to be £36. The medicine costs are high-a nurse at ours told me they can't buy them in as cheaply as they are sold online.
We were there so frequently with our old cat the vet stopped charging us the consult fee!

What’s the breakdown on the bill? Our consults are £35, £30 if a follow up is needed.

I’ve paid £40 for liquid antibiotics before.

I paid over £100 to treat a guinea pig for a similar thing a couple of weeks ago. Most of it was three different meds/eye drops. I was slightly annoyed to pay £20 for eye gel I could get in the chemist for £3!

My DD is training to be a vet, so grit teeth and carry on.

Yeah it's expensive! My cat recently wasn't eating, so had consultation, antibiotic and painkiller. £85!

And annoying the insurance excess starts at £85..

Magic is always getting gunky eyes. I buy over the counter chloramphenicol.

Quick visit for repeated projectile vomiting - check over and anti-emetic jab around £70. Annual MoT and inoculations around the same.

Yeah sounds normal. Our consultation fee is £30 plus meds on top. Girl cat had a bout of cystitis a couple of weeks ago. Forked out about £80 for two different medicines - both of which gave her a dodgy tummy on top of dodgy bladder - and are now sitting barely touched in a cabinet. Cheers cat!

Make sure you have decent insurance. Just in case!
And be glad it’s not a dog with an ear infection. Hundreds.

Agree with Wolfie. Insurance all the way! We have a life time plan for both cats and it's about £30 a month. Its reassuring to know it's there should a really expensive bill come our way, or they develop a condition that requires long term treatment.
