Not convinced Basil is a black cat anymore

Can I still call him a black cat? He may have black front legs and a black head but the rest of him seems to get more russet coloured by the day. He's a completely different colour to the teenage tearaways kittens.

And yes - I'm fairly sure he used to be blacker than this.

Are you going to take him to the vet? I don’t think their meant to change colour like that.

I had a “tuxedo” cat - Smudge who was pure black with white paws/chest. As he got older he changed colour to this type of red/black mix. Apparently it’s natural in some black cats as they age. Obligatory photos attached for posterity

Leroy looks conker brown in sunlight. I think a lot of black cats go browner as they get older too.

Donkeys years ago I adopted a rescue who was the most stunning russety black. Never seen anything like it, he was a shorthaired moggy of about 2 or 3 years old fwiw. Anyway, after he'd been with me a while his colour reverted to proper black - my vet's opinion was that the colour change was most likely to do with him having had (and recovered from) a deficiency of some sort. I'd be getting him checked if he were mine tbh

My tuxedo cat is 18 and definitely more brown than black

My girl goes brown in winter. She seems to get a white undercoat that lightens her.
