Advice on stopping cat scratching carpet...

We have 2 indoor cats, they systematically destroyed our old stars carpet and we have recently replaced it. We did a fair bit of research and went for a short twist pile which we're pleased with. At least one of the cats is scratching the new carpet Angry, the other one seems to have stopped.

Has anyone successfully stopped their cats scratching like this? We have a large scratching post but they largely ignore it as they have with the huge variety we have tried in the past.

Mine did this but I bought a outside door mat and put it at the top of the stairs, they haven't touched the carpet since. Not sure if it's the natural smells of it but I top it up with some cat nip sometimes.

Thanks Wishful is it a coir one? I think something flat might be the solution, they're just not interested in the pole scratchers apart from for the occasional stretch!

I had some success with a citrus scented spray I bought in a pet shop - the citrus smell is unpleasant to cats, so you spray it on the furniture/fittings you want to deter them from scratching.

Beaphar Pet Behave Spray (used daily when he was scratching a lot), plastic carpet runner to cover doorways, and a stern telling off after each time he was caught.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm hoping to go triple threat, water spray is ready on the stairs, I was thinking some kind of spray to discourage them plus maybe 2 scratch mats rather than posts (will buy one and see if they like it).

You could try buying a carpet mat as well as a scratch mat, and spray the mats with cat nip to make them attractive to your kitties.

I feel your pain op. I have the same problem. I bought horizontal scratchers. She likes the £7 cardboard rectangular boxes, ignores the far more expensive and attractive looking ones and scratches the carpet still...

Haissen course door mats, I've got one at the top and bottom. My old cat just won't use a post
