So ashamed!

Took Fat Bastard to vet, and he’s put on another 1.7Kg, now weighs in at over 8Kg.

I put him on a diet a year ago, he gets 2 x 2/3 a Felix pack a day plus two small (very small) handfuls of Purina biscuits .

His B and S get the same and weigh in at 4Kg and 2.5Kg respectively. No weight gain.

They’re grazers, he’s a snarfer. I put food down, then spend all day picking up and putting down their food to stop him eating theirs.

Am I right to conclude that he’s getting fed elsewhere, I just don’t think I’m putting down enough calories to allow for this weight gain?

(When I got him he was a starving stray.)

Photo attached in case anyone who knows him.....

Any suggestions?

Unless he's buying his own he must be getting fed somewhere else. 8kg is BIG.

sashh · 14/03/2019 01:37

He's wasting away the poor thing.

Seriously though, yes he probably is getting fed elsewhere, or maybe not actually being fed but helping himself.

I have no idea on how to resolve things though, sorry.

Beautiful cat though, love the expression on his face.

Smotheroffive · 14/03/2019 01:42

A picture of them together would make his size easier to gauge. If he's just a big dcat then he'll eat more, especially than one who's only 2.5 kgs!

I reckon he must be a very big boy!

Smotheroffive · 14/03/2019 01:43

How old? I mean has he stopped growing?

IncrediblySadToo · 14/03/2019 01:45

He’s gorgeous!

I had a FatCat (also a starving ‘stray’) I spent years trying to stop her getting too big, then years trying to get her to keep the weight on (kidney issues).

It’s hard when you’ve got a grazer too. BoyCat was not impressed having his food lifted.

I’d try putting a collar on with a tag asking people not to feed him as he’s on special food for a medical condition & putting your phone number. He might well be ‘living’ elsewhere as well.

RamblinRosie · 14/03/2019 01:52

Oh yes, he is a big cat, but now he’s a big fat cat.

I fully expect to find him stuck in the cat flat, stuck in a place of great tightness, with Rabbit’s friends and relations trying to pull him out!

Are you weighing the dry food? Because even very small handfuls is a fair amount given that he’s getting like 1/3 of the feeding guide amount of wet food, it wouldn’t actually be hard to be feeding him too much.

Especially if he’s getting any amount of the other cats food and given that packet feeding guides tend to be over generous anyway.

Smotheroffive · 14/03/2019 01:56

I thought that about two small handfuls of biscuits too. Seems a lot.

RamblinRosie · 14/03/2019 02:28

The Felix pouches suggest 2 to 4 per day, he gets 1 plus 1/3 as well as a really small handful. Yes, he probably does nick some of the other two’s , but not much!

The other two have the same amount, no weight gain!

I really think it has to be him scrounging elsewhere.

Incredibly Thanks, he’s an ugly git, but he’s my ugly, gorgeous git.

Will be getting “Do not feed me” collar.

Lots of people (me included) feed hedgehogs cat biscuits. I put mine in a place designed to stop cats entering, but if not they could be enjoying the extra

mimibunz · 14/03/2019 02:38

Can you increase your play time with him to get him more exercise? Mine responded well to games of ‘hide and seek’ which would get him so excited he’d run out the cat flap and do a few laps in the garden!

Justagirlwholovesaboy · 14/03/2019 02:41

@mimibunz you can’t explain something this cute and not provide a video link!!!

AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 02:49

I'd probably stop feeding him. He's clearly being fed elsewhere, so you're killing him with kindness. Leave it 3 days and see if he loses weight. Has the vet checked his bloods?

mimibunz · 14/03/2019 03:01

I’ve got a video of him playing in the snow.

So ashamed!
mimibunz · 14/03/2019 03:02

Hmmm that didn’t work!

Smotheroffive · 14/03/2019 03:03

Do not remove all food from your dcat, they switch into starvation mode very quickly and toxic acidosis, which will kill him.

I don't suppose you would, but just worth saying after that post.recommended!

Dippypippy1980 · 14/03/2019 14:29

Did the vets soggest you try another brand of cat food?

I think felix might contain added sugars? Zooplus has lots of varieties with high meat content.

I would also try the don’t fed me collar

IncrediblySadToo · 14/03/2019 18:28

I think he’s gorgeous 😊

RamblinRosie · 14/03/2019 22:02

No way would I stop feeding him!

He doesn’t play, he spends most of his time outside unless the weather is really evil. He mostly patrols to keep next door’s Evil Jasper cat at bay.

He’s a stray, was starving when he tipped up here, I did everything I could to trace owner.

Will be looking into lower calorie food.

Incredibly I know the truth, he’s an ugly, fat, cat of little brain. But he is adorable.

I use Lily’s kitchen - no grain and high meat content.

Although as long as he is happy and he vet isn’t too concerned, maybe just let him be? He has had a tough start in life and has found heaven with you!!
