Feel bereft, 16+ old cat put to sleep today

I posted a couple of weeks ago about my cat losing the the use of of one of his back legs.

He deteriorated rapidly and the vet thought he had a tumour. She said not much they could do etc. He rapidly went down hill over the last week, and today we came to the decision that it was the right time to put to sleep.

He passed away in my arms and I feel so sad. Me and DH have cried non stop.

My 15yo ginger Tom was PTS 10 days ago due to illness and I was devastated- I cried virtually non stop on the day, and on & off for more days after that. I found the whole thing traumatic.
Please try to hold onto the fact You have done one last act of kindness for him x

Heartbreaking for you both

Sorry for both losses. It is heartbreaking when they go. I cried loads when we had our lovely Vinocat PTS but it did gradually get easier as time went on.

I'm so sorry about your baby. I'm sure your cat had a wonderful life and was loved and cherished. Xxx

Thank you to everyone for your kind words, it means a lot.

I have had a lousy night and been awake most of the night, but when I was trying to get off I had a clear image of him in my mind running, which he would never been able to do again. In his prime he was a huge strong cat. He was king of our road!

We have another cat and is a bit confused. He's normally up and causing mischief by now, but is h xiding in the spare room.

You poor things, it is just so so hard to accept. What you said there about him being so strong and huge in his prime really struck a chord with me as that is how I felt after my own cat was PTS back in October.

Time definitely helps, but it still hurts like a bitch some days and I find myself in floods. My partner is the same. We loved them and we have to give them kindness in the end as we can help them avoid so much pain by letting them go.

Oh OP ((((hug)))) it's awful. When our cat died 2 years ago, me and DC all cried for 3 days :( and still do sometimes. Our other cat was OK (as far as you can tell) in a few days. Look after yourselves and try to have a quiet time if possible. You were a wonderful loving owner to your Dcat, and gave him a lovely, long and happy life.

Thank you Porridgeprincess and BrinkPink I know time will help. When he came to us he was in a dreadful state, he had a massive wound on his back and hadn't been neutred. I am happy that he had 11 happy years at our house xx

Sounds like he landed on his furry paws and I love to hear when this happens.

Porridgeprincess all my boys have landed on their furry feet :) We have never intentionally set out to get a cat. We have only had three, but all of them for a long time. All of them just rocked up at our house and we let them move in. Someone sent me a quote by Mark Twain, about a house without a cat is not home... So true.

Stillnumb. I am in exactly the same unfortunate position as you. My gorgeous boy was put to sleep this week and I have been a teary mess every since.

He seemed absolutely fine until about 2.5 weeks ago when I took him to the vets because he was not eating or being social just staying in his box all the time. Vet done bloods, x-rays and ultrasound and they thought that he had a tumour too. They tried everything they could for him. We had periods were he seemed to be good and then he dipped again. In the end he just became weak and he wasn't the cat he was in his prime and the vet couldn't really do anything more so we had him pts. He is being cremated. I packed away today all his things, his bowls, bed and litter tray.

He really was my best friend for the 13 very happy years we had together. He'll not be there in the morning looking his breakfast when I get up or there to greet me when I come home from work. There is a massive hole in my house and my heart were he should be.

Hopefully in times for both of us, the tears will stop flowing and we will be able to remember all the good times we had together.

Albaba I am very sorry to hear about your boy. The house seems very empty without him, and I feel so sad when I see the empty space where his bowls were. I haven't had the heart to make lunch this weeks, as he always stood next to me waiting for his treat of tuna or whatever.

My boy deteriorated over just a few weeks. I have been looking at some photos of have and that made be realise how much he had declined. I know it was the kindest thing to do in the end, but I feel awful.

I hope that your pain lessens soon, and you can look back at the many happy times you had with him xx
