How to stop cat scratching brand new carpet

I have a new carpet on my stairs - we tried having no carpet but it was too noisy. And cold.

My cat will not stop going at the bottom steps - usually is always to get my attention I feel too. I can’t put plastic on it as doesn’t seem safe on a stair step to be slippery. Has anyone got any suggestions?

Cat has toys, scratching post, can out, access to food (or usually asks by scratching the food bowls as she does when she wants food) and is played with. She’s not particularly well behaved generally and hard to get to stop doing anything like this (well she’s a cat I know Grin) but this is really upsetting me as it was a cheap carpet but a big expense to me iyswim? I have kept extra off cuts in case I have to end up getting steps replaced but I would rather stop her. Carpet is only a month old and I can see where she is wrecking it already. She’s also wrecked a dining chair recently with the same thing. I always get up and go to where she is doing it and she runs away so she knows she shouldn’t be doing it!

When I say attention - she wants me to wake up in the morning (around 4 or 5 Angry) so will do it loudly to make me get up. She will also do it when shes been offered all the above but it’s raining or cold so won’t go out - and she’s bored.

I have Kong toys but she is clever so worked them out fast and eats the lot really quickly.
She also gets really bored of toys in about 1/4 of a second

Am I fighting a losing battle with my soft furnshings?

Basically yes. I lock mine in the kitchen overnight as he also thinks 4:30am is breakfast time.
