My little friend needs to be PTS

Just that, I’m so sad. He is a lovely cat, nearly 15, very friendly and affectionate. about a year ago started to sneeze. He’s been to the vets multiple times as it progressed to coughing, now being sick a lot too and can sound like he’s chocking. He’s also showing signs of dementia, he forgets where his food is and has pooed in his food bowls a few times despite having a litter tray close by.
On top of this my son has developed an allergy to dander which is getting worse & worse, resulting in an a&e visit last week.
The vet has said we should consider ‘when it’s time’, and I think it’s time. The appointment is booked for Friday, and I keep crying thinking about what I’m going to do. I don’t know how I’ll cope without him head bumping me, curling around my legs and generally being my little furry friend. Can I have a virtual hand hold please?

So sorry to hear this. I had my beautiful boy PTS in December. He was 15 and had a sudden decline.

If it makes you feel any easier, the actual end I was dreading. The vet was so kind, she didn’t mind me crying and said it was all ok. The end bit was so so peaceful and it was very quick and respectful. It was the best ending I could have asked for. The vets will be very sympathetic and kind to you. It was an awful day, but I’m glad I didn’t wait any longer.

Do you have anyone to come with you when the time is right to PTS your pet?
It's such a very hard decision to make, but it is always "better a week too early than a day too late when it comes to the descision.
Your last act that you are doing for your little friend shows just how much of a caring loving owner you are, by taking away their pain you are putting it on yourself.
Cry as much as you want and never feel guilty for doing so.
Time will it make easier.
And after the tears have dried you will be able to look back with memories filled with love and happiness of your loving cat. Take care X

Ive just checked the status of my paw print memorial kit I ordered from Amazon and it’s not been processed - I’m not going to have it in time 😢😢😢😢. We are getting his ashes back so I guess that’s something. Seems so awful thinking about this when he’s sat right next to me.

Yes thank you my husband is coming too. I keep thinking about bringing the empty cat carrier back from the vets. I’m not coping. I don’t want the kids to know in advance either, so I keep popping into the kitchen to have a quiet cry.

Get in touch with Cheeky Little Prints. Explain the circumstances and she'll get you a kit out very quickly, think I got mine the next day. The vet may offer a paw print. Mine did

Or go to John Lewis or mothe care and get a baby hand print kit.

Sosad. I’m sorry to hear about your little cat. It’s so hard but you’re doing a brave and loving thing. Regarding the paw print, the pet crematorium did this for me when my cat went for cremation. They also keep it on file in case it’s needed in the future. I should think most pet crematoriums will do this so it’s worth you asking. Sending hugs and warm thoughts for Friday. 💕💐

So sorry op, this is horrid but he’s going to feel no pain. He’ll always be with you in memories. This is the best most caring thing you can do for him. You will grieve a lot, but he won’t, he’ll be at peace

The vets may be able to do a paw print for you - mine did.

Literally cannot believe someone has accused me of being cruel 😢. Thanks to all who have been supportive.
FYI we could not get the vet to come to our home, they could only come later on and we don’t want our young children to witness it.
He’s taken a turn for the worse yesterday, he’s vomited after eating and again overnight, so I’m not going to delay it.
It’s hard enough dealing with the loss of a beloved pet without being called cruel too.
Thanks for all the suggestions for paw prints I’m not near any mother cares or John Lewis so I’ll see if vet suggests something.
Otherwise I’ve picked out some nice photos of him outside in the sunshine in better days and I’ll buy a nice frame x

When we had William PTS the vet took paw prints for us so it's definitely worth asking.

@Sosad2004 there is no way on earth you are being cruel. Ignore anyone who says otherwise. As other posters have said you are doing the best by your beloved pet.
When you bring your pet into the vets to be PTS they will always give them a sedative before hand, to calm and relax them.
Being surrounded by loving owners, as they pass on, no matter if it takes place in a vets or any other surroundings is the best all of us animals lovers could hope for. X

Taking the cat to the vet is not cruel. My late cat would have freaked and hidden if a stranger came into my house. That would have been awful. She was much better off at the vet with her sister beside her. She wasn't bothered in the slightest. Also I very much doubt many vets will do home visits. Mine probably wouldn't.

Fortunately I already had my files prints. But the vet also did one for me. But it was overpriced!

Vets are expert at ensuring the procedure is carried out in a peaceful, respectful way, whether at home or in the surgery. Once your cat has been sedated, he will be calm and relaxed and will slip away painlessly with you by his side.

Thanks to all who responded. It took place this morning and once he’d had the sedative it was very quick. We’re going to bury his ashes in a sunny spot in the garden where he loved to play.
I didn’t even think about asking about paw prints but came home to find 3 muddy paw prints on the lounge floor. I’m thinking it’s a last little gift from him.
