Stray cat to House Cat?

Hello
We have been feeding a couple of strays during the winter. One of them refuses to come into the house but will eat. The other was coaxed into the house and refuses to leave! That's OK as our 'house' cat loves her and they snuggle together but our house 'stray' refuses to be touched by us lowly hoomans! Has anyone had any experience of this before? With time and gentle coaxing, will our house 'stray' become more comfortable with human contact? I would love to hear your stories of taking in stand offish strays!

I've had more 'timid stray to lap cat' cats than I can count. The two things that achieve this are patience and a cat flap. If you have a flap it's a good idea to take the flap bit off for a while (obviously easier in Summer) and then put the food just inside the house. The cat will get used to coming through the hole. Basically if they know they always have an escape route they feel much happier to just stay inside.

In the meantime does he have shelter in the garden? And have you managed to get both of them to a vet to see if they're neutered?

We don't have a cat flap (just a hooman flap aka the door!) We know that our 'new' cat is neutered because her eartip has been nicked off which is a sign they've been neutered apparently. We are quiet and respectful and always come bearing treats when we try and interact with her and always withdraw as soon as she shys away. She's never been vicious though. I would love her to be more relaxed around us. I guess it's time. As for the other cat, I think that he lives in our chiminea! He positively won't come in but tells us when it's time to feed him. He is proper bossy!

Yes you're right about the ear tip. Well if you can get a cat flap the other one will be coming in soon too I'm sure. And I'm sure your girl will be friendly eventually. It often takes around 18 months or so though.
