Best litter

Hi, I am currently using a clumping litter which I change every 3-4 days but it sets like concrete and makes changing the litter a right faff.
I have tried lining the tray but the cat tears the liner to shreds and makes a right old mess.
Any ideas?

Are you making it deep enough? I use clumping eco litter- worlds best or cats best smart pellets.

And using clumping litter normally means you need to change it less often - are you scooping pee/poo daily?

HelloJackieYouLookNice · 17/02/2019 19:26

We started off with wood pellets because that’s what she was used to, initially I wanted to change to Worlds Best but she will only use it if there are pellets mixed in with it, plus I like you hate the concrete like clumps on the bottom at emptying time so once the bag is finished I’m going back to the £5 a bag pellets! I can’t say I’ve noticed any difference in smell either!

Yes scooping every day. Putting it in 2-3 inches deep. I’ll look at the litters you have recommended and see if they make a difference.

I’ve started using Sanicat smart pack. You unwrap it and it’s filled with litter and it has a kind of nappy at the bottom which soaks up wee and smells so you just have to pick out solids. It lasts a week and then you just gather the whole thing up, bin it and unwrap a new one. Before that, I was using worlds best, very expensive, clumps would fall apart and I was replacing it a lot!

Also, the bottom of the liner is very robust so cat doesn’t seem to rip it to bits!

I only like catsan litter

Beaverhausen · 18/02/2019 15:27

Look on zooplus they have a huge variety, they have a paper base one that is really good called cats best. Personally I used a woodbased litter from b&m ÂŁ6 for 30 ltrs and it lasts me 2 weeks for 10 cats you just need a cup full a day and it can be flushed down the toilet or added to compost or green bin once you have removed the poops.

We are struggling a bit with litter too. We started with catsan as that's what they were used to but I didn't like the smell even when it was fresh from the bag. Tried a few different clumping litters- some clump better than others, some clump so much that they stick like concrete to the base of the tray, some are so fine that they get walked all over the house even with a mat in front of the litter trays. Tried some wood pellets that we were given and they won't even use it! I love the silica crystals- no smell at all for at least 5 days, just remove solids and stir it all up so it absorbs wee. But it's not cheap! I considered trying the cheapest of the cheap supermarket stuff and just binning the lot every day or two, but we would run out of space in our bin!

MrsBrill · 19/02/2019 11:09

The best one I've found is the cheap and cheerful Sainsbury's basics non-clumping litter. I hate the clumping ones, though. It's about ÂŁ1.60 a bag and absorbs smells really well (better than the wood pellets, which is what I used before).

@cheshirecatty where do you buy the smart pack? I can only see the clumping/non clumping litter.

dementedpixie · 19/02/2019 11:18

I think it might be catsan smart pack

Cheshirecatty · 19/02/2019 14:17

@LeslieYep, @dementedpixie you’re absolutely right, my mistake! I get it off Zooplus which is much cheaper than the supermarkets. You can also top it up with a bit of normal catsan to make each one last a bit longer.
