Advice please - cat may have FIP

Hi everyone,

My gorgeous cat became ill last week and was found to have fluid on his chest, 250ml was drained. An ultrasound revealed what looked like abnormalities around his liver and heart and blood work was done on Monday to test for FIP and presumably a few other things. After his chest was drained he bounced back as expected on Tuesday and Wednesday but by Thursday he was displaying signs of deterioration again (lethargy etc. but not pain.) The blood tests have not come back yet, I phoned the vet yesterday and they said the best course of action was the out of hours practice if he deteriorated more. My concern is what to tell them - can I ask for the fluid to be drained again in the hope that it will bide more time until a firm diagnosis? I know FIP is basically a death sentence when it manifests itself and I don’t want my little one to suffer but I can’t make an informed decision without the results as there may be another underlying cause. I am going to call the vet again when they open this morning as I need assurances that the out of hours will be fully informed of his condition so far. Feeling very upset and frustrated right now. Anyone have an advice?

That sounds awful for you both. I can't really advise, only a vet can do that. But I too wouldn't want to make any decision to pts without getting a diagnosis, unless he was in a lot of pain without any way of relieving it.

Sorry you have this worry , I'm also awaiting a confirmation of FIP for my kitten, feeling pretty devastated atm, it's come as such a shock.

With mine, they've kept him in while waiting for results, he's on a drip to keep him hydrated, I feel better that he's getting pain relief and medical care, but wasn't given an option to take him home.

Any news for you yet?
