Moving house (within 1.5 miles) with Cat

How long should you keep them in? Obviously there's a chance of them going back to the old house.

We moved less than a mile, kept them in for 2 weeks and they never went back to the old house.

My first cat had been a stray and then moved in with me. I moved less than a mile (busy urban outskirts) and intended to keep him in for a few weeks. He had other ideas and demanded to go out at 4.00 on the first morning there. I relented (he was very persuasive..) and expected to have to look for him in the morning. He was back for breakfast at 6.30 miaowing outside the back door.
Not recommending this approach (he was a very bright and streetwise cat).
