Where does your cat sleep through the night?

Mine sleeps at the foot of my bed on he's blanket.
My friend said she locks hers in the kitchen at night because she doesn't want her cat roaming around at night 😬 I've never heard of this I thought they all just roamed around the house, sleeping where they like. This is my first ever cat and he's almost 1. Have I been doing it wrong 🙈

They sleep where they please. On or in the bed if they want.
One likes to go in the bathroom cupboard.

candlestickmakers · 05/02/2019 15:41

They tag team yowling outside my bedroom door. Angry

candlestickmakers · 05/02/2019 15:44

Cats aren't usually nocturnal. They're crepuscular.

Allergictoironing · 05/02/2019 15:58

Mine mostly sleep on the sofa overnight, though they have most of the house available with the exception of the kitchen (too many potentially dangerous things if one's cat is completely brainless) and the 2nd bedroom (all my smart & work clothes laid on the bed in there). Boycat takes up his station behind the curtains on the bedroom windowsill at some stage before I wake up in the morning, Girlcat has been known to make us both (me and Boycat) jump as she appears from the wardrobe, or even from under the bed.

TheExtraGuineaPig · 05/02/2019 16:08

Out of interest why do some people stop access to the catflap at night? I thought cats like to go out at night most.

I shut ours in the utility room (with cat flap and food/water/bed) if I can find them. Otherwise they roam, sleep on the sofa and wake me up shouting for food at about 6am.

Parsley65 · 05/02/2019 16:11

Our cat officially belongs to DD15, so she has him in her room at night. The door is open though, so he can go anywhere except the kitchen. He often sleeps on the landing.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 05/02/2019 16:13

@TheExtraGuineaPig my cat doesn’t use a litter box. Have tried so many tines he just won’t. I’m not sure if he could last the whole night without being able to go outside to the loo? So he stays in the back of the house with access to the garden. Would prefer to keep him in at night but I don’t want him to not be able to go to the loo if he needs to.

Yes they do, but they’re safer indoors, from cars & fights & possible predatory humans Hmm

Thirtyrock39 · 05/02/2019 16:21

We close the bedroom doors as our cat and cat is supposed to stay downstairs . Lots of blankets and cosy throws for her to sleep on downstairs
She miaows from about 530am outside our door for feeding though 😵

VoyageInTheDark · 05/02/2019 16:24

Ours has access to the whole house except the nursery. He sometimes sleeps on our bed, usually the spare bed, occasionally a chair in the kitchen, but never the cat bed

rosydreams · 05/02/2019 16:25

TheExtraGuineaPig

well when i used to let cats out here are the problems i faced

at night she was a more prolific hunter (she let loose live mice inside)
more interactions with foxes/wildlife(one got sprayed once it stank)
if a cat got muddy or oily i wouldn't realise till morning thus had a dirty sofa to clean.
On extremely cold days if they fall asleep outside they can freeze

Bringbackthestripes · 05/02/2019 16:26

He has the whole ground floor to walk around -4 rooms- so he sleeps wherever he likes, sofa, his bed, the rug. We just have to shut him downstairs because otherwise he purrs too loudly and keeps us awake!

Beamur · 05/02/2019 16:28

Kudos for the use of crepuscular Grin
Why do cats want to sleep on our heads and why do some of us let them...?

rosydreams · 05/02/2019 16:31

yeah my since gone chocolate point Siamese was a face hugger he had to be as close to mummy as possible lol

flamingofridays · 05/02/2019 16:34

mine both sleep in the kitchen/dining room at night. they have a lovely basket with fluffy cushions in it placed next to the radiator.

If I let them roam the house nobody would get any sleep. They meow at doors, scratch to get in and then jump about like morons. I have been scratched on my face by them chasing each other around the room and climbing the headboard, so it had to stop!

chickydoo · 05/02/2019 16:34

I would love mine to sleep on my bed. DH shuts them in the kitchen
He is an arse

Megan2018 · 05/02/2019 16:37

@chickydoo
If my DH did that I'd shut him in the bloody kitchen and have the cats in with me!
Cats before DH every time.

Beamur · 05/02/2019 16:45

My DH is almost as soppy with the cats as me. He draws the line at face sleeping though.

thatsmyspace · 05/02/2019 16:49

For those that are saying their cat wakes them up because they want feeding, why not just leave dry food down before you go bed? That's what I do. Stopped him waking me at all hours 😬

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 05/02/2019 16:50

Mine has been known to shuffle under the duvet, head on pillow, turn his back to me and glare if I dare move. It was very much "my side, your side an no SNORING hooman"

Ollivander84 · 05/02/2019 16:51

Like this....

ALongHardWinter · 05/02/2019 16:54

Mine sleeps at the foot of my bed,on her own little blanket,in the winter. In the summer, she quite often sleeps in the bath, or anywhere she can find that is cool.

PetuliaBlavatsky · 05/02/2019 16:59

TheExtraGuineaPig apart from stopping the aforementioned prolific hunting, it's also safer for the cats. One of ours is extremely black and only has one eye. We live in a very rural spot where it's very very dark at night and sometimes people can drive like maniacs down the lanes. I worry she wouldn't be spotted. We also have foxes, badgers and mink prowling at night.
Oh and also the other bugger cat started catching and killing bats a while back!
Lots of reasons to keep them in!

Newtonthehorizon · 05/02/2019 17:01

Mine have their own pet couch next to the aga in the kitchen

I am also a bit off the cat sleeping on beds (although he still does), since I found a tick in mine !
