How many litter trays?

I always thought it was one per cat + one. So one cat would have two, two cats would have three etc. I'm relatively new to cats and have just bought two litter trays ready for when we bring our cat home. DSD is insistent that you only need one per cat as her Mum has two cats and two litter trays. So is there a standard or does it vary depending on the cats?

I e got two cats and one tray. When I first adopted they had two but one was never used.

some like a tray for peeing and another for poo, some cats like to pee in the handbasin or down the shower plughole, just because

some will share, some will not!

We have two cats, and two trays just now and that works fine, but before, with three cats...same two as now, plus one, we had loads more trays and would still get "incidents" such as the handbasin and shower plughole.

MN rules state 27 trays per cat plus 15 spares.
I have one (large one) for 4 cats (will cope with two cats at a time!) and they all manage to avoid crapping or pissing on the floor.

Our tom has one. He is happy with that 🐱

Depends entirely on the cats. Mine are pretty easygoing (so far - oldest is only 6).

I have 3 cats & 3 trays, 2 in the same room & 1 in the hall. They hardly ever use the one in the hall (it’s just there in case they get shut out of the room with 2 in).

All 3 cats prefer the supersized one.

With 1 cat I’d start with 1 tray & see if it’s happy with that

I started with 2 smaller ones but they tended to use the same one so bought an xl one for them to share so we just have 1 for 2 cats

I had one cat with two trays. Got to be two cats but they were still happy with the two.

One cat has 3. She will wee on the floor if less.

My Tom has 2. This is dow n from 4 before he was castrated.

In time i may try to reduce it. But cautiously

Got the second one because the little sod kept peeing in the hallway so I put one there.

You are correct about the usual recommendation of one bed cat + 1 extra.

Litter tray issues is in the top 5 reasons why people surrender their cats to charities, if you have space for two trays it's really worth having them if it makes for a happier cat!

My cat has two ( one on each floor ) and will only poo in the upstairs tray and wee in the downstairs tray

2 cats, 1 tray. That's their choice, when we got cat2 I got another litter tray but it never got used, they chose to share. Strange really as they barely tolerate each other
